Under general supervision, the HVAC Plumber/Pipefitter Master at LSU is responsible for the fabrication, installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of piping systems used in the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) and building mechanical infrastructure throughout the campus. This includes steam, condensate, chilled water, domestic hot/cold water, compressed air, and other utility piping systems. The role requires reading and interpreting blueprints and mechanical drawings, using precision tools and equipment (welders, pipe threaders, benders, etc.), and ensuring compliance with applicable building codes, safety standards and university policies. Additionally, the HVAC Pipefitter may assist with emergency response, preventive maintenance programs, and coordination with other trades, contractors and departmental staff.
Job Responsibilities
30% -Measure, cut, thread, groove, bend, weld, and assemble pipes according to specifications. Install piping systems for steam, hot water, chilled water, gas, air, and drain lines. Layout and fabricate piping assemblies based on blueprints, isometric drawings, and schematics. Secure pipes to walls, ceilings, or fixtures using brackets, clamps, and hangers. Install valves, fittings, and other control devices into piping systems.
25% -Adhere to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations related to HVAC and piping installations. Follow company safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, confined space entry, and lockout/tagout. Maintain clean and organized work areas and ensure safe handling of tools and materials.
15% - Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical manuals. Document work performed, including materials used and system testing results. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other trades to coordinate installation and maintenance schedules. Communicate effectively with clients and supervisors about project status and any necessary adjustments.
15% -Operate tools and machines such as pipe threaders, welders, saws, grinders, and lifts. Maintain tools and ensure they are in proper working condition. Use measuring and alignment tools to ensure precision installation.
10% - Assist in system start-up and commissioning. Train or mentor apprentices and junior technicians. Support emergency repairs or after-hours maintenance as needed. Participate in continuous improvement and energy-efficiency initiatives.
5% -Performs other duties as assigned by the department, including participation in on-call rotations and emergency response as needed.
Special and Physical Requirements
This position requires a valid driver's license, will require an MVR, and is subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Ability to work in all weather conditions. In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of an emergency or closure.
This position will require a physical evaluation based on the physical demands required for the position.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience: Three years of experience or training in pipefitting, steam fitting, or plumbing.
