The Pima County Facilities Department has an opening for a Plumber to join our team. In this position, you will perform journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance involving commercial-level plumbing systems, which includes Commercial Fire Protection Systems, FP piping modifications, new installations, main fire pump repairs, and replacements.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Performs commercial-grade pipe fitting, fabrication and installation of ductile iron, copper (potable and DWV) steel, stainless, cast-iron, high-density polyethylene, and PEX;

  • Performs commercial drain/sewer system repairs and replacements including ABS, DWV, cast-iron and C900;

  • Conducts natural gas piping for low- and medium- pressure systems, black-steel threaded and press connections, HDPE fusion piping and CSST;

  • Installs/maintains lift stations, ejection and sump pits;

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of UPC, IPC, NFPA 13 and NFPA 20 codes and guidelines;

  • Repairs detention facility plumbing and performs new installations including penal ware and ligature-resistant plumbing fixtures;

  • Excavates large-scale underground piping system installations, modifications and repairs;

  • Maintains central plant process installations and repairs heating, condensing and chilled water systems including commercial and industrial size boilers;

  • Demonstrates knowledge of backflow prevention and cross-connection control measures.


Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship program in the plumbing trade or craft AND one (1) year of journey-level experience in the plumbing trade or craft.

(Relevant education may substitute for up to six months of the aforementioned experience.)

OR:

Three (3) years of experience with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Specialist in the plumbing trade or craft. Some positions may require additional specialized training and/or experience.

OR:

Five (5) years of experience as a commercial journeyman Plumber.

Preferred Qualifications(Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Experience with/knowledge of UPC Codes and IPC Codes.

  • Experience with/knowledge of backflow prevention/cross-connection control.

  • Experience with/knowledge of commercial, industrial, and residential plumbing.

  • Experience with/knowledge of all phases from rough-in to finish.

  • Experience with/knowledge of threading machines, power tools, sewer machines, and hand tools.

  • Experience with/knowledge of installing, connecting, and testing water, sewer, gas, air, and vacuum lines.

  • Experience with/knowledge of excavation safety/confined space and fall protection.

Licenses and CertificatesValid driver license isrequiredat time of application. Valid AZ driver license isrequiredat time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review todetermineapplicant’s suitability tooperatecounty vehiclesin accordance withPima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain andmaintainthe required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.  Certified as Approved Backflow Tester or able to acquire this certification through Pima County sponsored training withing 6 months of hire date. Failure to maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application. Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing.

Special Notice ItemsThe ability to obtain jail pass is required. The Countyrequirespre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. Physical/Sensory RequirementsSome positions require the ability to: lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, cold; safely wear required safety clothing/equipment; work with on in the presence of obnoxious odors; work with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products; ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites; differentiate between colors. Action Activity - bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping; Motion Activity - grasping, fine movement; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, on a radio; Vision - operate a motor vehicle, operate machinery, distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Position requires on-call hours. Working conditions will be determined by the position.
