Plumber And Steamfitter II-(260003WJ)

The Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, under the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH), is seeking a Plumber and Steamfitter II. This opportunity will play an essential role in overseeing the installation, repair, and maintenance of fluid transmission systems, sanitary fixtures, and heating systems. Your responsibilities include supervising the installation and adjustment of hot and cold water lines, as well as ensuring the proper functioning of toilets, sinks, showers, and soil lines. You will estimate costs, order supplies, and maintain inventory to ensure seamless operations.

Beyond your technical expertise, you will uphold safety standards, ensuring the use of prescribed safety equipment and compliance with safety protocols. Your role extends to preventive maintenance, keeping systems operational and efficient. Reporting to the Director of Facility Plant Management, you will collaborate closely with a dedicated team, contributing to the smooth functioning of essential infrastructure. This position offers a dynamic environment where your skills in plumbing and leadership will make a tangible impact on facility operations and the well-being of its occupants.

Please Note: The selected candidate will work 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The days off are Saturday and Sunday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Supervise installation, repair, and maintenance of fluid transmission systems, sanitary fixtures, and heating systems.
  • Estimate costs, order supplies, and maintain inventory for plumbing operations.
  • Install and adjust hot and cold water lines, including mixing valves.
  • Ensure proper functioning of toilets, sinks, showers, and soil lines.
  • Clean and inspect grease traps to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Maintain and adjust hot water circulating pumps and steam pressure on heating systems.
  • Operate steam reducing stations and maintain high and low-pressure steam lines and traps.
  • Oversee operation of condensate return pumps to optimize system performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Enforce safety standards, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and the use of prescribed safety equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of various materials including steel, malleable, cast, and galvanized iron, clay, glass, concrete, transits plastic, orange surge pipe, copper tubing, fittings, valves, fixtures, hand and power tools, saws, chisels, hammers, dies, stocks, taps, drills, torches, soft lead, and silver, gauges, and measuring devices.
  • Familiarity with plumbing sanitation laws and safety regulations, including state plumbing and steam fitting codes.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing, testing, and locating failures and malfunctions, and implementing corrective measures.
  • Ability to interpret plans, sketches, and instructions accurately, and maintain precise cost and maintenance records.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including extreme heat, cold, dampness, and humidity, and to endure prolonged periods of standing.
  • Skill in managing plumbing supplies, ordering materials, and maintaining inventory.
  • Proficient in caulking, lead joint packing, cutting, cleaning, fitting, soldering copper tubing, and cutting and threading pipes.
  • Physical stamina and endurance for lifting, carrying heavy objects, and working in cramped or confined spaces.
  • Competence in scheduling work, evaluating, training, disciplining, motivating, and reviewing subordinates.
  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class D) or equivalent in the state of residence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and employment as a Journeyman Plumber.
  • Experience with installation and/or maintenance of plumbing related utilities, such as water, sewer, drains, steam, condensate, and air lines.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH):
Located on over 20 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient, and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.

WRCH provides inpatient services to 290 adults and 30 adolescents, inclusive of a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service program for 10 patients.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in plumbing and steamfitting.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Plumber's license issued by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
