Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Plumber within the Water Resource Recovery Operations Division, Drinking Water Operations Directorate. Under the supervision, of the Senior Stationary Engineer Electric, the Plumber will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) equipment located in facilities and buildings including upstate Water Resource Recovery facilities both East and West of Hudson. Specific duties include:

- Installing, maintaining and repairing piping of all kinds for water, gas, storm, waste, soil, and vent systems.

- Setting, maintaining and repairing plumbing fixtures, equipment, and appurtenances.

- When necessary, determining and requisitioning job materials while work is in progress.

- Operating, Inspecting, Maintaining, and repairing pumps, valves, HVAC equipment (boilers, furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and ventilation equipment).

- Operating a motor vehicle.

- Determining a course of action to prioritize repairs on critical equipment.

- Purchasing and procuring parts and materials

- Maintaining maintenance records, including spare parts inventory

- Maintaining purchasing files and records

Special Working Conditions: Plumbers may be required to work indoors or outdoors during severe weather events.

Preferred Skills:

- Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis

- Experience with computer-based maintenance management system

- Microsoft Office including Word and Excel

- Ability to research O&M (Operations & Maintenance) manuals to identify repair parts and supplies

- Ability to contact vendors and obtain quotes for repairs and replacement parts

- Ability to prepare reports and keep records and files

- Ability to lift heavy parts, tools and equipment while performing equipment maintenance

Hours and Shift:
35 hours per week. May be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Qualifications

(1) Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber acquired within the last ten years; or
(2) Not less than three years of full-time satisfactory experience described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time experience as a plumber’s helper or apprentice, or training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable plumber experience.
The apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor or any apprenticeship council which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. The schooling must be approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency. Each year of helper or apprentice experience, or approved schooling is equivalent to six months of satisfactory plumber experience, up to a maximum of two years of satisfactory experience.
Driver License Requirement: You must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment. If you have moving violations, license suspension or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
