The successful candidate for this vacancy would participate in a modified work week, earning a flex day off each bi-weekly period by working additional time each day. Modified work weeks established in accordance with the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement and are subject to change.

POSITION FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Building Maintenance, the Tradesperson - Plumber is responsible for ensuring the effective maintenance, repair, alteration, and installation of plumbing equipment and systems in city-owned and leased facilities. This role performs a diverse range of tasks and small projects to uphold the functionality and integrity of plumbing infrastructure, contributing to the overall operational efficiency of the City’s facilities.

KEY DUTIES:

  • Inspect, install, repair, and maintain domestic and commercial water tanks, plumbing fixtures and fittings, decorative fountains, drinking fountains, drainage systems, pumps, motors, and related equipment.
  • Manage the Operations Cross-Connection Control (CCC) program, overseeing the testing, repair, and replacement of backflow prevention devices as required. Manage the CRD CCC online portal, assigning device testing and completing necessary forms as required.
  • Assess requirements and deliver routine plumbing services to buildings, document repair requirements, and offer technical expertise in capital project work.
  • Initiate and complete the application process for plumbing permits.
  • Operate the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) by inputting preventative maintenance data from facility inventories, analyze work requirements, and handle the initiation, processing, and closure of work orders.
  • Review monthly maintenance work and provide recommendations on work schedules to supervisor.
  • Procure supplies, obtain quotes and approvals, and monitor, review, and report on the work of contractors.
  • Operate vehicles for the transportation of materials and equipment. Operate tools and equipment, such as power tools and man lifts, and ensure the maintenance of all equipment and tools as required.
  • Perform related duties as required.

INDEPENDENCE:

  • Work is performed according to established standard practices, maintenance procedures and schedules, requests for service, or is assigned by supervisor.
  • Work is reviewed through daily meetings with supervisor; and non-routine purchases or procedures are discussed with supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of BC Plumbing Code.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Use hand tools and power equipment.
  • Perform building and equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal with the public and outside agencies in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Work safely on job sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training, and Occupational Certification:

  • High school graduation.
  • Plumbing Trades Qualification (TQ).
  • Cross-Connection Control Certification (40 hours).
  • Current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
  • Required to obtain criminal record clearance.
  • Confined Space (8 hours)
  • Aerial Platform Training (8 hours)
  • Fall Arrest Training (8 hours)

Experience:

  • 5 years of commercial plumbing experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
