GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position plays an essential role in the daily operation and maintenance of a large, complex facility by ensuring that critical plumbing, boiler, hydronic, fire protection, and mechanical systems remain safe, efficient, clean, and operational.
The Journeyman Plumbing & Mechanical Maintenance Technician performs skilled, journeyman-level work involving the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of plumbing and mechanical systems throughout 38 state buildings. The position requires strong technical knowledge, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to diagnose problems and develop effective solutions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
- Maintain and repair plumbing systems throughout the complex, including piping, fittings, plumbing fixtures, flush valves, water heaters, hot water recirculation pumps, valves, and other related equipment. Identify leaks and system deficiencies and complete necessary repairs to ensure reliable operation.
- Maintain and troubleshoot boiler and hydronic systems, including boilers, pumps, piping, steam traps, steam and water pressure regulators, boiler controls, and associated equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostic checks to identify potential problems before they result in equipment failure.
- Service wastewater and pumping systems, including vertical sewage pumps, subsurface and submersible sewage pumps, condensate receiver tanks and pumps, and other related equipment. Troubleshoot operational issues and perform repairs as necessary to maintain dependable system performance.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair fire sprinkler and mechanical systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical valves and associated components. Perform work in accordance with applicable safety requirements, local and state codes, OSHA regulations, and professional standards.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized mechanical rooms by keeping boilers, pumps, piping, fittings, and equipment clean and operational. Monitor equipment condition and promptly address leaks, maintenance concerns, and other deficiencies.
- Collaborate with other skilled trades, including HVAC, electrical, and carpentry personnel, to troubleshoot complex building issues, coordinate repairs, and complete maintenance projects safely and efficiently. Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and building occupants when necessary.
- Provide responsive, high-quality maintenance and repair services throughout the complex while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, reliability, and customer service. Respond to routine and emergency maintenance needs, use appropriate tools and diagnostic methods, and take ownership of problems from initial assessment through completion.
Examples of duties
PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to applicants who have at least three (3) years of plumbing experience.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of plumbing systems.
- Skill in repairing, fabricating, and replacing system parts.
- Ability to solve most problems without any direct supervision.
- Ability to use hand tools, sewer machines, pipe groves, soldering and brazing equipment, and computer operating systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associate's Degree
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Plumbing)
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Plumbing)

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work in tight spaces, adverse weather conditions, and in hot boiler rooms.
- Some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
