We are responsible for backend applications on Linux and Windows Servers (ex. HAFAS, Jenkins, Artifactory, GitLab, etc.), with a strong focus on implementation, automation, and maintenance (3rd level support). As we evolve, we're increasingly developing internal tools and platforms to enhance developer productivity and streamline operations.

Our strategic initiative is building an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) , which provides a unified, integrated developer experience layer that automates repetitive operational work and connects information, ownership, and services in one place.

For this exciting journey, we are hiring highly skilled & motivated colleagues who would like to join the Application Infrastructure Support team in the role of IT System Software Engineer to keep our systems running smoothly, advance modernization as part of our IT strategy, and develop innovative tooling for our developer community.

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Develop and maintain internal developer tools and automation solutions, primarily using Python
  • Ensure operational stability and modernization of backend applications and infrastructure
  • Design, build, and evolve our Internal Developer Platform (IDP) through software development and automation
  • Support internal project teams with consulting, provisioning, and technical solutions
  • Design, develop, and maintain the Internal Developer Platform (IDP) - a strategic initiative to unify, automate, and streamline software delivery across the FIS ecosystem
  • Develop internal tools and automation solutions using Python to improve developer productivity, operational efficiency, and platform capabilities
  • Support internal project teams with consulting, design, setup, provisioning, and handover to production of systems for new IT products
  • Ensure operational stability and resilience of Linux and Windows-based systems and software components throughout their lifecycle, including change management
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and test major updates (OS and software) in cooperation with internal project teams, providers, and vendors
  • Drive continuous improvement through development of automation capabilities and optimization of infrastructure provisioning
  • Troubleshoot and resolve incidents and problems within our system landscape, supporting internal project teams
  • Work closely with experienced engineers in our team and collaborate tightly with IT colleagues in Hamburg, operations providers, and software vendors
  • Document procedures, tools, and system architectures
  • BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent experience in IT, maritime industry, or international logistics
  • Strong programming skills in Python with experience developing production-grade tools, scripts, or applications
  • Strong experience with Linux/Unix operating systems in a managed enterprise environment (installation, configuration, and support of RHEL systems)
  • Strong experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Artifactory, GitLab, etc.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Ansible (Terraform is a plus)
  • Experience setting up reliable, enterprise-ready infrastructures and middleware: databases (PostgreSQL), application servers (Tomcat/WAS), HTTP servers (nginx/Apache), and other 3rd party software
  • Familiarity with Windows administration (software installation, basic principles)
  • Familiarity with network management (basic OS configuration and troubleshooting)
  • Familiarity with AWS or other cloud solutions
  • Excellent analytical skills and eagerness to learn
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duty on a temporary basis (as backup for the support team)
  • High proficiency in spoken and written English

The perfect candidate can also demonstrate:

  • Software development experience and understanding of software engineering best practices
  • Experience with additional programming languages (Python, TypeScript, Go, or similar)
  • High communication and coordination skills
  • Advanced AWS experience
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience in requirement analysis and design of high-availability IT systems
