Job Description

The Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, and supporting platform environments that power the organization’s retail and operational systems. This role ensures that store platforms, point-of-sale environments, and supporting infrastructure are secure, consistent, and scalable.

The position works closely with engineering, deployment, and support teams to automate platform builds, improve system reliability, and streamline software deployment. The role combines hands-on systems engineering with automation, troubleshooting, and collaboration across development and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Engineering & Environment Management

  • Design, build, and maintain platform environments that support the company’s retail and point-of-sale systems. Develop and maintain standardized operating system builds and platform configurations that ensure consistent and secure deployment across store environments.
  • Define hardware specifications and platform configurations for point-of-sale environments and continuously optimize builds to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Automation & Deployment

  • Develop and maintain automation for system builds, testing, configuration management, and version control. Implement tooling and processes that improve deployment speed, consistency, and reliability across environments.
  • Support automated deployment pipelines and collaborate with development teams to enable efficient software releases and rapid rollback when necessary.

System Reliability & Performance

  • Monitor system health, availability, and performance across store environments. Implement monitoring and reporting solutions to track platform health, software versions, and operational status.
  • Diagnose and resolve infrastructure and system issues through troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning to ensure stable and secure platform operations.

Infrastructure & Cloud Technologies

  • Install, configure, and maintain infrastructure technologies, including cloud hosting platforms, virtualization environments, and containerized systems.
  • Develop configuration management templates and audit systems against those standards throughout the system lifecycle to ensure consistency and compliance.

Collaboration & Cross-Team Support

  • Partner with software developers, QA teams, deployment teams, and help desk support to ensure platform environments are reliable and well supported.
  • Assist with building and maintaining test environments, troubleshooting store configurations, and supporting middleware and systems that connect store operations.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Create and maintain technical documentation for platform systems, build processes, and operational procedures. Develop knowledgebase materials to support internal teams and improve supportability of the platform.
  • Serve as a technical resource for support teams and less experienced engineers.

Role Expectations & Competencies

The following competencies reflect the nature of the role and the environment in which it operates, rather than prescriptive minimum qualifications:

  • Ability to document technical processes and develop support documentation.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and provide support for operational issues as needed.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within cross-functional teams.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in Windows and Linux systems administration or platform engineering.
  • Experience supporting platform engineering or DevOps processes in enterprise environments.
  • Experience with operating system standardization, systems hardening, and virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Intune, or SCCM.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills used to support infrastructure and deployment processes.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience supporting retail or quick-service restaurant (QSR) environments.
  • Experience working with cloud hosting platforms, container technologies, or infrastructure automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and support new technologies.
