Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

Assist in start-up, shutdown and normal operations of power plant systems.

Perform operating tests and inspections, and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, as required, to achieve proper operating conditions.

Execute instructions from the Control Room Operator for performing equipment clearances or making equipment/systems ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures, which include system alignments, isolation, clearing, tagging and locking, testing, etc.

Maintain logs as assigned. Log readings will be recorded and reviewed using PI for trend analysis.

Maintain plant cleanliness. Report problem areas to O&M Supervisor.

Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.

Conduct routine operational checks at the facilities and conduct assigned preventative and predictive maintenance.

Follow established safety and operating procedures.

Coordinate with O&M Technicians during troubleshooting evolutions to support quick resolution of unit outages.

Coordinate lockout/tagout activities

Assist in maintenance activities under the guidance of the senior technicians in the field on an as needed basis

Plant Technicians who are fully qualified in their position (Step 3) are required to complete the qualification requirements for O&M Technician. The timeline will be determined by the Plant Manager.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Dependable, reliable and predictable attendance is required.

Must maintain a valid, in-state driver’s license at all times

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The PT operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision performing duties independently with only general direction. The PT encounters recurring work situations of moderate complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. Decisions are made within prescribed operating procedures and guidelines for both normal and abnormal situations.

The PT must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental policy/permits. The PT must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The PT must perform duties that result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees have the responsibility to the customer and their co-workers to meet the plant’s objectives and customer’s needs in both an accurate and timely manner.

Education and Experience:

Ability to understand procedures and instructions, specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Trade school certificate/training in electrical or mechanical trade or equivalent experience is preferred. A minimum of two years’ experience in power plant operations is desirable. Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion turbine operations, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable. Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable. Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry is desirable. Must successfully complete a plant technician’s knowledge examination.

Stair/Ladder Climbing Must be able to climb stairs and/or ladders on equipment at the plant. Must be able to walk on platforms at high altitudes (80 feet or higher)

Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and pull or push equipment or materials. Moderate over-head reaching and lifting and grasping is necessary.

Fingering/Grasping/Feeling: Must be able to write, type, and use phone system.

Working Conditions:

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening, and random drug screening during employment. Extensive smoking restrictions exist in and around the facility.
