Position Overview
The Plant Protection Officer (PPO) / EMT protects bp Whiting personnel, facilities, assets, and operations through professional security services, emergency medical response, emergency communications, and incident management. This position combines industrial security, emergency medical services, dispatch operations, public safety, customer service, and emergency response in a refinery environment. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, professional, self-motivated, and able to make sound decisions under pressure. Relevant backgrounds may include emergency medical services, law enforcement, military service, industrial security, fire service, corrections, government or public safety work, and related fields. bp provides required uniforms, personal protective equipment, patrol vehicles, communication equipment, and job-specific training.
Compensation and Schedule
Starting rate during probation: $29.10 per hour. l Rate upon successful completion of probation: $32.68 per hour. l Rotating 12-hour schedule (2-3-2), including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. l Shift differential pay and overtime opportunities may be available based on schedule and operational needs.
Benefits begin immediately upon hire and include medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid vacation; paid sick time; a company pension; and a 401(k) with company matching up to the company discretionary match limit. Plant Protection Officers are also eligible for annual performance bonuses, annual company profit-sharing bonuses, shift differential pay, overtime opportunities, and educational assistance benefits.
Probationary Period and Required Training
Newly hired Plant Protection Officers are subject to a one-year probationary period. bp reserves the right to extend the probationary period when warranted. Candidates must possess a current EMT-Basic certification at the time of hire. During the probationary period, employees must successfully complete bp-sponsored training and qualification programs, which may include: l Security Operations Center and emergency dispatch training. l Professional Security Officer Program (PSOP) certification. l Site-specific security, emergency response, and communications training. l Additional department qualifications and competency evaluations required for the assignment.
Professional Development and Certification Incentives
bp supports continued professional development through approved training and certification opportunities. Available incentives and sponsored certifications are subject to the current compensation program and company approval. l Certified Protection Officer (CPO): additional $3.00 per hour upon successful completion. l Other approved security, emergency response, and professional development opportunities.
Security Operations l Conduct foot and vehicle patrols throughout refinery property. l Protect personnel, facilities, assets, and operations. l Perform investigations, inspections, searches, and security-related assessments consistent with company policy and applicable requirements. l Respond to security incidents, alarms, and refinery emergencies. l Operate access-control, visitor-management, alarm, and electronic security systems
Emergency Medical Services l Provide emergency medical care within the employee's authorized EMT scope and applicable protocols. l Respond to medical emergencies throughout refinery operations. l Maintain the ambulance, EMS equipment, supplies, and response readiness. l Participate in medical training, drills, and emergency exercises.
Emergency Communications and Dispatch l Operate the Security Operations Center and perform emergency dispatch duties after completing required department training. l Dispatch Security, Fire, EMS, and other emergency resources using computerized radio and communications systems. l Coordinate notifications and communications during incidents and emergencies. l Monitor alarms, radio traffic, and security technology.
Documentation and Teamwork l Prepare accurate incident, medical, safety, and investigative reports. l Collaborate with refinery teams to support safe and secure operations. l Represent bp professionally when interacting with employees, contractors, visitors, the public, and external agencies. l Use appropriate de-escalation and conflict-resolution strategies.
Current EMT-Basic certification at the time of hire. l At least two years of relevant experience in emergency medical services, industrial security, military service, law enforcement, government service, public safety, or a related field. l High school diploma or equivalent. l Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. l Strong verbal and written communication skills. l Strong critical-thinking, situational-awareness, and problem-solving abilities. l Basic digital literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint. l Ability to successfully complete all required training and qualification programs. l Ability to work rotating days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. l Ability to perform the physical duties of the position throughout employment.
The position may require work in indoor and outdoor industrial environments, reduced-light conditions, inclement weather, heat and cold, elevated locations, noisy areas, areas near hazardous materials or process equipment, and independent or team-based assignments. Required personal protective equipment must be worn as directed.
Industrial security or critical-infrastructure experience. l Emergency response, dispatch, or emergency-management experience. l Experience operating ambulances or other emergency-service vehicles. l Incident command or investigation experience. l Experience in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing, utilities, or other heavy industrial environments.
