Veolia operates and maintains two Organic Processing Facilities for the CIty of Toronto, one

located at the Dufferin transfer station in North York the other at Disco Road Etobicoke.

The facilities are designed to receive source separated organics (SSO) waste and to transform it

into biogas and composting material: an excellent example of circular economy transforming

waste into valuable goods, limiting the pollution of the environment.



The process is based on Mechanical Pretreatment to remove non-organic contaminants, wet

Anaerobic Digestion to generate Biogas, Wastewater treatment using aeration tanks, DAF or

membranes, Dewatering using centrifuges, to reuse the water and separate the solids for

composting.



The Operator will be part of the Veolia team operating the organic processing facilities and will

be responsible for performing the activities required to operate the plant. This role combines

tasks relating to process control, laboratory testing, wastewater management and equipment

operation.

Primary Duties:

  1. Control and operate automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment including pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, centrifuges, chemical feed, etc.
  2. Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in assigned area;
  3. Monitors and records operating conditions observations and data in a shift log;
  4. Use SCADA for process monitoring and systems control and to operate various equipments
  5. Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process control units or alter unit processes. This includes TS, TSS, PH, and other lab tests typical of wastewater and anaerobic digestion.
  6. Sample wastewater, sludge and gasses (odor control, digester, etc.) according to schedule.
  7. Makes independent decisions concerning process control changes. Directs the activities of other operators assigned to the shift.
  8. Ensures conformance to process specifications. Diagnoses basic operational problems a. and takes corrective action per procedure. Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor and takes corrective actions;

  11. Performs manual labor including filling and emptying of machine bins and cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required.
  12. Practice good housekeeping in the assigned area and properly dispose of waste according to safety and environmental policies.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High School education or equivalent with the ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally (operational, process, safety and quality instructions)
  • Associate's degree in a science or technical area preferred
  • Must have an understanding of the Processes including Digesters, wastewater treatment process, water quality assurance, maintenance strategy and laboratory procedures
  • Must demonstrate effective skills in troubleshooting, problem solving and team building
  • Ingenuity and initiative are required to coordinate problem resolution and to execute the schedule requirements within a team environment
  • Over five years experience in a related position and environment with knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of water/wastewater treatment
  • Experience in operation of Anaerobic Digestion highly regarded

Required Skills:

  • Attention to details and capability to accurately follow procedures
  • Analytical skills to understand data and graphs. Capability to make decisions based on data.
  • Proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)
  • Ability to use computer systems such as Email, SCADA trending and data retrieval
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls as needed and work extended hours to accommodate site needs
  • Demonstrated commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company's Code of Business Conduct and other Company policies and procedures
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing (operational, process, safety and quality Instructions). Ability to perform basic math
  • Reading text, Document use, Numeracy, Writing, Oral communication, attention to detail. Good use of the English language. Deadline oriented. Work well with others. Good hand eye coordination. Repetitive motions required. Rotating through-out the facility as required
  • Reliable and dependable on start and finish times as it impacts the operations

Schedule:

  • Permanent full-time position
  • Monday-Friday
  • Rotating shifts: 6:00 AM-2:30 PM & 2:30 PM-10:30 PM
  • Overtime availability

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $28-$31 per hour with comprehensive medical and dental benefits package.
