Compensation: £14.50 / hour


The Plant Operative will play a key operational role at the Duncrue site, supporting the safe and efficient processing of waste materials through the operation of mobile and fixed plant machinery.
The role requires a competent and experienced operator capable of safely operating large mobile plant, including a 20-tonne excavator and telehandler with a 14-metre boom, to support waste handling, loading, and processing activities. The Plant Operative will also assist with fixed plant operations, material movement, housekeeping, and site safety, ensuring all activities are carried out in compliance with Health & Safety and environmental regulations.

Location: Irish Waste, 116 – 120 Duncrue Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim, BT3 9AR

Key Responsibilities

Plant & Machinery Operations

  • Safely operate mobile plant, including a 20T excavator, telehandler (14m boom), and other site machinery as required.
  • Load, sort, move, and manage waste materials in line with site operating procedures.
  • Support operation of fixed plant and processing equipment where trained and authorised.
  • Carry out daily pre-use checks and routine inspections on all machinery operated.

Waste Handling & Site Operations

  • Assist with waste segregation, stock management, and material flow across the site.
  • Ensure materials are processed efficiently to support throughput and productivity targets.
  • Maintain clear and safe working areas around plant and processing zones.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to Health & Safety, Environmental, and operational procedures at all times.
  • Wear required PPE and ensure it is fit for purpose.
  • Report defects, hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
  • Support site compliance with waste permits, audits, and inspections.

Maintenance & Housekeeping

  • Carry out basic cleaning and routine maintenance of machinery and work areas.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards across plant and yard areas.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work closely with Yard Operatives, Drivers, and Supervisors to ensure smooth site operations.
  • Communicate operational issues or delays to the Site Manager promptly.

This is not an exhaustive list and you may be required to undertake other duties appropriate to the role for which you are trained and competent.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Proven experience operating large mobile plant machinery.
  • Competence operating a 20-tonne excavator.
  • Competence operating a telehandler with a 14-metre boom.
  • Experience working within an industrial, waste, recycling, or heavy plant environment.
  • Strong health & safety awareness.
  • Reliable with excellent attendance and timekeeping.

Desirable

  • Experience operating additional mobile plant (e.g. loaders, shovels, balers).
  • Experience operating fixed plant.
