The general purpose of a Distribution Planner 1 position is to analyze forecast circuit loading, calculate voltage levels and determine protection requirements for new large customer and subdivision requirements and then to issue system improvement plans to provide reliable and efficient power delivery.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Monitors circuit configuration changes and loading on existing distribution circuits.
  • Analyzes existing facilities to compile feasible alternatives for distribution system changes.
  • Assigns circuit connection points for large services and specify system requirements in proposed new subdivisions.
  • Performs fault current calculation and implements system coordination.
  • Initiates and coordinates protective device and switch installations.
  • Posts planned circuit changes on circuit maps.
  • Exports circuits from GIS and imports into Cyme program, corrects data, runs load allocation, and performs voltage analysis utilizing Cyme software.
  • Reviews circuit for subdivision growth, large commercial load data, and circuit configuration changes and updates the Load Forecast.
  • Updates the Distribution Load Profile.
  • Develops system improvement plans from the Long-Range Plan (new feeder circuits, circuit reconfiguration, voltage conversions, line extensions, phase balance, system ties, conductor upgrade, switch installs, capacitor bank installs, electronic recloser installs, voltage regulator bank installs, etc).
  • Coordinates planning, design and construction with internal and external personnel for system improvement plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated highly skilled working knowledge of overhead and underground designs utilizing GIS
Demonstrated proficiency with Distribution Planning Software applications including Cyme, GIS and MicroStation
Exceptional rapport with internal and external customers
Exceptional attitude toward CPS Energy, current job and associates
Exceptional attendance and punctuality
Demonstrated ability to initiate and write technical memorandums, letters and various written documents
Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and coordinate system improvement projects
Record of safe work practices and safe driving history
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimum supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field OR experience in drafting
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) with the ability to efficiently create, edit, and manage documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and email communication
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately execute load allocation utilizing Cyme software
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare high quality design sketches utilizing MicroStation for all types of system improvement projects

High School Diploma or GED

Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
