Job Description

The City of Aurora is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Plan Examiner in the Division of Building and Permits.

Under the direction of the Director of Building and Permits or designee, the plan examiner will conduct comprehensive plan reviews for all types of residential and commercial structures. This position examines, reviews, and evaluates highly detailed architectural and engineering plans and specifications for new buildings and repairs and alterations to existing structures to determine compliance with National, State and local building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, zoning, fire, fuel gas, energy, accessibility and NFPA codes.

Other duties of this position include but are not limited to: Act as Code Official on project by project basis, overseeing the application of trade specific plan reviews and inspection determinations performed by inspectors; Assist in supervision of inspectors; Provide guidance, technical assistance, code interpretations, and problem solving for field inspectors; Provide code requirement information to the public, contractors, and licensed architects and engineers; Coordinate on a project by project basis required external review agencies, their specific comments and their statuses; Participate in code updates and code appeals as needed; Other duties as assigned.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in architecture, fire protection engineering, mep engineering, and/or structural engineering; or an equivalent combination of considerable experience in inspections and plan review work and education will be considered. This position also requires minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in preparing and/or reviewing construction plans and specifications.

Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to physical, drug screen, and background check.

This is a full-time, executive position. The position works on site in the Development Services Center with work hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Starting annual salary is $85,633.60., depending on experience and qualifications.
