Job Description

Shift – 6:30am-3:00pm or 7:00am-3:30pm

Site/Location: Detroit, MI

Status – Regular Full Time

This position performs HVACR mechanical, and facility support system installation, repair and preventive maintenance. Responsibilities include installation, fabrication, maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration systems and components. The primary purpose is to provide high-quality, cost-effective installation and repair services to all piping, plumbing, HVACR systems and miscellaneous facility support systems at company facilities. Assists leadership in the oversight of mechanical projects performed by outside contractors, Operating Engineers in HVACR maintenance and operations. Proper job performance results in the continued safe, reliable and efficient availability of all equipment and systems necessary to sustain a productive, optimal work environment at company facilities.

  • Assumes a support role, under the direction of the team leader, in response to all company facility emergencies.
  • Responsible for all plumbing, piping, HVACR mechanical service and material acquisition for completion of assigned tasks.
  • Responsible for acquisition of all tools, repair parts / plumbing / pipe fitting supplies, refrigeration servicing or material handling equipment, welding / brazing / cutting equipment and supplies, necessary to complete routine and emergency tasks.
  • Utilizing blueprints, instruction manuals and similar resources, investigate and analyze facility equipment; system problems make required repairs or communicate status and repair recommendations to leadership.
  • Responsible for the safe and proper application of safe work practices on the job site. Compliance with all pertinent federal, state, local, MIOSHA regulations, and construction codes and standards.
  • Responsible for the safe and proper lockout of hazardous energy sources on all facility systems or equipment upon which work is to be performed while maintaining assigned equipment and spaces in optimum condition.
  • Responsible for notification of any company facility discrepancies noted to team leadership and any mechanical service that cannot be properly completed.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs to existing, de-energized electrical systems and components, conduct maintenance, installation and repair, to a variety of architectural components and hardware.
  • Provide services to all facility operations including those required to support housekeeping, landscape and parking operations, as well as general customer service.
  • If assigned tasks within a facility include refrigeration and air conditioning system services, then the HVACR Mechanic will be responsible for providing service to ice machines, cafeteria refrigeration, a variety of direct and indirect air conditioning equipment and basic gas fired or steam heating equipment. Includes the testing, maintenance, diagnostics and repair of the electric / electronic / mechanical controls associated with the systems serviced.
  • Track all daily work in addition to Preventative Maintenance in the work order system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in HVACR mechanical equipment and system installation, fault analysis and repair, welding, pipefitting, plumbing and HVACR mechanical system service at a comparable facility.
  • As an alternate to eight (8) years’ experience, the individual shall be certified / licensed Journeyman Plumber.
  • Pipefitter / Refrigeration Service or Mechanical Contractor with at least two (2) years of field experience.
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license is required.
  • If assigned tasks include refrigeration and air conditioning system services, then the HVACR technician must possess a Journeyman Refrigeration License and EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
  • Must be capable of independently assembling materials and resources to complete assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate well with customers, staff and employees.
  • Must be capable of training junior personnel and coordinating with the work activity of others on the operations and maintenance team.
  • Must be able to join pipe using the thread, groove, solder and silver brazing methods. Ability to utilize oxygen-acetylene cutting, brazing for various tasks, bend tubing, form sheet metal and weld a variety of materials, for basic system or equipment fabrication and support.
  • Must be proficient in the application and use of all hand and power tools, general construction and material handling equipment, the performance of all aspects of pump, fan, motor transmission and steam / hydraulic system installation, repair and maintenance. HVACR Mechanical component fabrication, pipefitting, plumbing, welding, grooving, soldiering, Oxygen-Acetylene cutting / brazing and machine repair.
  • Ability to layout, install, maintain and repair, basic plumbing, piping and HVACR systems, consistent with current codes and standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.
  • Other related skills and/or abilities may be assigned to perform this job.
