About the Unit and Role:

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Children’s Hospital is a high-acuity quaternary unit, combining cardiac and general intensive care, and providing statewide leadership in paediatric emergency care through the Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval (PIPER) service.

We are seeking dynamic and collaborative Paediatric Intensivists to join a large team of specialists providing the full spectrum of paediatric intensive care, with the ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team in a complex quaternary setting. Participation in the PIPER-Paediatrics retrieval roster is part of every consultant’s role. Experience in cardiac intensive care and point-of-care ultrasound is valued, and there is scope to contribute to the unit’s teaching, research and statewide retrieval activities according to interest and service need.

Position Specifications:

There are a number of smaller ongoing and fixed-term fractional positions available within the Department of Paediatric Intensive Care, to cover a combination of ongoing service requirements and fixed-term backfill arrangements, at variable EFT ranging from approximately 0.25 to 0.5 EFT (up to 40 hours per fortnight). Commencement dates vary from July 2026 depending on candidate availability and service need, as set out in the table below. More than one suitable applicant may be appointed through this process. Applicants are invited to indicate in their application which position(s) and EFT they wish to be considered for.

Classification for these positions will be in accordance with the Medical Specialists (Victorian Public Health Sector) (AMA Victoria/ASMOF) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2022 – 2026.

Qualifications and Experience:

Applicants must hold Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) or equivalent, and be eligible for medical registration in Victoria. Substantial clinical experience in general paediatric intensive care, including the care of complex trauma, neurocritical care, oncology and bone marrow transplant patients, and in newborn and paediatric transport, is essential. Experience in cardiac paediatric intensive care, complex congenital echocardiography, dual paediatric and adult intensive care practice, and point-of-care ultrasound is highly desirable. A demonstrated commitment to teaching, quality improvement and research is highly regarded.
