Physician Extender/Athletic Trainer

This position is full time at 40 hours per week.

This role will serve as a primary orthopedics/sports and family medicine departmental contact for professional, collegiate, and high school teams seeking care for their athletes. The role will require significant time spent in Epic performing registration, scheduling, order generation/management, pre-authorization, and day-of-service activities to ensure timely and accurate HSHS and Prevea care delivery, and we will provide initial and ongoing training and support. This role will address needs throughout the year, on-season and off-season, and be available on weekends, evenings, early mornings, and other off-hours for team needs.

At Prevea Health, The Physician Extender is a healthcare professional who assists in the delivery of high-quality patient care by performing various clinical tasks within their scope of practice. Working closely with physicians, the Physician Extender will provide essential support in assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and other conditions. The role includes patient examination, diagnostic testing, assisting in procedures, patient education, and facilitating communication across departments. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical reasoning skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and patient safety.

What you will do

  • Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough patient histories, perform physical exams (e.g., posture, gait, joint motion, muscle function, and neurologic evaluations), and interpret findings to assist in diagnosis.
  • Clinical Support: Assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including musculoskeletal ultrasound, joint/bursa injections, casting, and aspiration.
  • Patient Education: Provide pre- and post-operative education, therapeutic exercises, and guidance on the use of durable medical equipment.
  • Referrals and Communication: Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers for referrals, tests, procedures, and follow-up care.
  • Medical Documentation: Update and maintain accurate patient records by filing dictations, test results, and referral forms in a timely manner.
  • Scheduling & Coordination: Assist with scheduling surgeries, tests, and procedures, as well as facilitate pre-certification for procedures and insurance claims.


Education Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Athletic Training Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified as a Athletic Trainer issued by the State of Wisconsin with the National Athletic Training Association - Board of Certification (NATA- BOC) Upon Hire Required
  • CPR/Basic Life support for Healthcare Providers certification from approved program Upon Hire Required
