The Vascular Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) is an advanced practice provider who delivers comprehensive perioperative care to patients with vascular disease. Working in close collaboration with vascular surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team, the PA plays an integral role in patient assessment, surgical assisting, and longitudinal management. Core responsibilities include performing preoperative evaluations, first-assisting in open and endovascular procedures, coordinating postoperative care, and managing patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
The PA is expected to exercise a high degree of clinical judgment and autonomy while functioning within the scope of practice and institutional guidelines. This includes prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. Strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset are essential to ensure efficient office workflows, optimal surgical outcomes and patient and provider satisfaction.
Length of shift is usually 8-12 hours per day. The Vascular PA position is primarily a walking and standing position with sitting a secondary requirement. Infrequent very heavy lifting and pushing/pulling occurs when assisting with patient transfers and transport. Reaching at all levels is needed for patient care activities and clerical duties. Coordination and agility required to move in small spaces, manipulate equipment, transcribe orders, and operate computer/typewriter, copier, and telephone. Must have good vision and color discrimination, auditory ability, and verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with others. Frequent exposure to radiation in the form of x-rays is expected.
Lifting: Lifts light loads continuously, such as charts, small supplies and equipment in patient rooms, at nursing stations and copier. Lifts heavy loads frequently, including patient lifts and equipment and assisting patients with ambulation. Lifts very heavy loads infrequently during assists with patient transfers/transport to/from gurneys and wheelchairs. Uses appropriate lift equipment, assistive devices and additional staff as needed for very heavy and heavy loads
Carrying: Continuously carries light loads, consisting of charts, supplies and equipment. Maximum distance carried is >100 feet. Occasionally carries medium loads, equipment, and supplies.
Pushing/Pulling: Pushes light and medium loads frequently. Very heavy loads moved infrequently, assists with patient transfers/transport on gurneys and wheelchairs. Infrequently moves heavy loads such as chairs, beds and wheeled tables.
Standing: Total standing hours per work shift may be up to 10 hours. Standing may occur while communicating, treating patients, assisting with procedures, operating copier, restocking supplies and medication lockers, and assisting with patient transfers. Requires frequent moving from place to place. There is no optional position.
Walking: Total hours per work shift is 5-7 hours. Walking may occur while communicating and directing visitors and patients, retrieving and restocking supplies and documents; going to and from patient rooms, operating room, copier. There is no optional position.
Sitting: Total hours per work shift may be 3-5 hours or more. Maximum consecutive time this activity occurs is 30-60 minutes. Sitting may occur while communicating with patients, visitors, physicians and staff; operating computer/typewriter and telephone; transcribing orders, completing forms and other clerical duties. Optional position available for certain tasks.
Climbing: Occurs infrequently while obtaining or restocking supplies through use of step stool. May use stairs during emergency and when elevator unavailable.
Stooping: Occurs frequently to obtain supplies from low drawer/shelf, and perform physical exam or procedures/wound care.
Crouching: Occurs occasionally while obtaining supplies from bottom drawer/shelf, performing patient care, or to service copier.
Twisting: Occurs frequently while working at bedside and desk and changing position to perform another function.
Kneeling and Crawling: Infrequently when performing patient care and retrieving supplies.
Reaching Above Shoulder: Occurs frequently to obtain/replace supplies, hang IVs, and adjust equipment.
Reaching Below Shoulder: Occurs continuously to obtain/replace supplies on shelves/cabinets, in drawers and to operate computer/typewriter, perform direct patient care activities.
Reaching At Shoulder: Occurs frequently to adjust equipment alarms, to obtain/replace supplies, use telephone, copier and small desk supplies, assist with patient care and transfers.
Handling: Occurs continuously to perform patient assessment and treatments, obtain/return/store medical supplies and documents; assist with patient transfers/transport, answer telephone, and operate copier.
Finger Manipulation: Occurs continuously to operate electronic equipment, maintain effective written communication, operate computer/typewriter, telephone, copier; perform patient care; transcribe orders, order supplies, perform clerical duties.
Feeling: Occurs continuously to accomplish fine motor tasks such as physical exam, wound care, procedures etc.
Coordination: Occurs continuously while performing simultaneous functions, including direct care procedures, bedside equipment, operating computer/typewriter, telephone, copier; replace/obtain supplies; clerical duties.
Agility: Occurs frequently while moving about in small spaces in exam and patient rooms.
Near Vision: Should be perfect (with or without correction. Continuously needed for observing patients, reading charts, supplies, transcribing orders, documenting, using telephone, computer, typewriter, receiving/responding to written communication from doctors, staff, patients, visitors and others, performing other clerical duties.
Color Discrimination: Color discrimination required frequently to assess patient condition.
Far Vision: Should be perfect (with or without correction). Occasionally needed for communicating with others, seeing emergency call lights, walking around office and hospital, running errands to other departments, walking quickly during emergencies.
Horizontal Field of Vision: Continuously needed for maneuvering in small spaces, around nursing station, patient rooms, office/clinic, to detect someone/something approaching from the side when facing forward and to be alert/aware of surroundings especially in emergencies.
Hearing Sensitivity: Normal hearing sensitivity continuously needed for face-to-face communications with others, use of phone, hearing emergency call buzzers and emergency signals such as fire alarms.
Talking: Clear speech and command of English language continuously needed for phone use and face-to-face communication with others, especially in emergency situations.
