Physician Assistant - Pulmonary (Jefferson Street Clinic)-(25006511)

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The University of Iowa Health Care, department of Internal Medicine is searching for a PA to function as a change agent incorporating the primary role of physician assistant and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes for adult Pulmonary patients.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
  • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for pulmonary patients.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
  • Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for basic and advanced management of pulmonary disease patients, with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
  • Perform medical diagnostic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
  • Participate in patient-management-oriented and educational conferences
  • Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families, including incorporation of palliative care, when appropriate.
  • Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
  • Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
  • Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise.
  • Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
  • Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations.
  • Incorporate research findings into practice.
  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality
  • assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
  • Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics; constructively manages conflict.
  • Inspire and motivate others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and driving organizational results.
  • Identify opportunities for and creates development plans that encourage employees to attend to the growth of their personal and professional capacity; engage self and staff in collective reflection of the University’s greater role in society.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in Pulmonary medicine is desired.
