Job Description

Matrix Providers is hiring a Physician Assistant - Orthopedics to join our team of talented professionals who provide health care services to our Military Service Members and their families at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, TX.

  • Employment Status: Full-Time
  • Schedule: Physician Assistant - Orthopedics routine duty hours are an eight (8) hour or ten (10) hour shift between 0600-1800 Monday through Friday, with one (1) hour unpaid lunch each day, not to exceed forty (40) hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree/Education: Must have graduated from an accredited college or university with at least a Bachelor of Science degree certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), and pass the PANCE from a Physician Assistant training program accredited by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Equivalency Determination Request: The Contractor may request an equivalency determination as a substitute for education requirements on this labor category.
  • Certifications: Certification: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association, or American Red Cross Healthcare Provider Course. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Board Certification: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) designation Physician Assistant-Certifies (PA-C)
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant as required in the TO. Shall maintain a license, registration or certification or they will be removed from independent practice and privileged providers will be placed in abeyance. If this time exceeds 30 days of abeyance, the provider will be placed in summary suspension in accordance with AFI 44-119, Medical Quality Operations, paragraph 9.16., until the license, registration or certification is renewed. Issuing agency grace periods are not honored by the Air Force Medical Service when renewing a license, certification, or registration.

Core Duties:

  • Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).
  • Technically direct and provide care for a variety of diseases and types of injuries (i.e., acute, chronic and minor trauma), and the skills to recognize emergency conditions in order to diagnose, prescribe for and treat diseases, disorders and injuries, and refer the more complex cases and serious conditions to qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.
  • Technically direct and teach other staff, provide educational lectures and participate in in- service training to staff members.
  • Promote preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviors and self-care through both formal and individual education and counseling.
  • Prescribe in accordance with approved treatment protocols and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee approved medications and immunizations.
  • Identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral to a physician.
  • Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice.
  • Establish collaborative rapport with physician, nursing and others in order to promote and facilitate primary care services.
  • Teach patients and family member's healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving wellness.
  • Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Shall provide occupational medical evaluations of military members with medical problems who are undergoing MEB or TDRL; this is the primary duty of this position. To the extent that the primary duty allows, and to ensure currency in practice skills, other clinical patients will be managed.
  • Shall provide a full range of Physician Assistant (PA) duties to include counseling, review of medical records, treatment and follow-up in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer. The PA is to provide and supervise the medical care for orthopedic conditions, treat patients in accordance with protocols, counsel patients directly and indirectly as required, and order appropriate diagnostic tests, as applicable.
  • Shall write a narrative summary detailing the findings, assessment, and recommendation concerning retention/deployment for individual military members undergoing MEB or TDRL.
  • Shall prescribe medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Shall coordinate patient care through a continuum to facilitate optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Shall comply with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures and guidelines used in MTF, and provision of care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Shall complete orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with AFI 44-119, Medical Quality Operations.
  • Shall participate in committees, functions, and other meetings as directed. The Healthcare Professional (HCP) will provide relevant and timely information to these groups, and assist with decision making and process improvement. Also, participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities designed to enhance health services.
