Job Duties

The PA works as part of the medical provider team, performing a variety of direct primary care services to patients. This includes physical examinations, assessment, diagnosis, treatment plans, medication management, lab review, and/or referrals, including hospitalization when necessary. The PA also monitors the general management plan for assigned patients. The PA performs these functions under the general supervision of a licensed physician.

• Obtains complete medical history from patients and/or their family members and performs complete physical examinations, all in consultation with a supervising physician.
• Provides health education to patients and their families as appropriate.
• Orders routine and diagnostic lab and x-ray studies according to approved protocols.
• Diagnoses both acute and chronic illnesses on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports, and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols.
• Prescribes medications as needed according to therapeutic goals. Explains medications and treatment plans to patients and their families.
• Formulates, initiates, and monitors management plans for assigned patients using approved protocols and/or consultation with a supervising physician.
• Refers patients who require more intensive services to a supervising physician, specialist, or hospital as necessary. Follows up on patients’ progress.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies required. Degree must be from an accredited school whose program is recognized by the state.
• License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Nebraska required. (Or license eligible.)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Two or more years of clinical experience either preferred or required, depending on clinic location.
• Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products required; experience with an Electronic Health Record preferred.
• Proficiency in English required.
• Proficiency in Spanish either preferred or required, depending on clinic location. If required, must be able to speak enough Spanish to examine Spanish-speaking patients and converse on a basic level.
• Demonstrated ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to culturally diverse patients as well as other OWCHC providers and staff members.
