What you’ll do: You’ll report administratively to the health services administrator, and clinically to the MTC Corporate Medical Director. Responsible for providing medical services related to diagnosis and treatment of detainee patients and emergency treatment of staff and visitors. Ensure that appropriate healthcare is accessible and provided to the detainee population in a timely fashion. Render medical judgment regarding care provided to detainees assigned to the facility in compliance with MTC Medical and customer directives, along with the Community Standards of Care.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform complete medical histories and physical examinations; form clinical impressions based upon findings; order diagnostic tests, interpret results of laboratory tests and radiological examinations, prescribe medications, and render treatments appropriate to clinical impressions.
  • Inspect, complete and analyze medical records, assign review and update medical classifications; complete admission notes, progress notes, treatment plans and discharge summaries and make rounds on patients admitted to the medical unit.
  • Serve in rotation with other providers to provide after-hours and weekend patient care, if required, to include accepting on-call rotation.
  • Refer patients for specialty consultations and treatment through the utilization manager process.
  • Utilize established corporate, facility and corrections policies and procedures in making decisions, while using sound independent judgment in performing the duties of the position.
  • Evaluate provision of services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of all patient's medical records. Observe applicable HIPPA rules.

  • Monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses.
  • Implement basic cost containment and utilization management for patient care and facility operations.
  • Comply with all applicable pharmacy regulations, especially those regarding controlled substances.
  • Provide health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis, as required.
  • Assist corporate counsel with responses to detainee lawsuits.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, QI, UM, P&T, and other meetings as required.
  • Facilitate, where applicable, NCCHC/ACA accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved appropriate medical services.
  • Comply with requirements of applicable regulations, laws, policies, standards and contracts.
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid, physically removing people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from confined areas.
  • Requires long periods of walking and standing.
  • Regular attendance required.
  • Promote the development of positive social skills among staff and detainees through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
  • Maintain accountability of detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

MD or DO Board Certified or Board eligible in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice or Internal Medicine. Valid license to practice medicine in the state of Texas, and current continuing education required by MTC Medical and professional regulatory board. Current DEA and current BLS certification. Must successfully complete required pre service training. Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post Hire Requirements: Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance.
