As a Physical Therapist Aide, you will perform various departmental duties and assist with treatment programs. You will work alongside an overseeing Therapist as you provide direct patient care and supportive services. This role is an excellent entry into the Respiratory Therapy field, offering a wealth of development opportunities and hands-on experience with some of the best caregivers in healthcare.

A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Shifts will vary between 7 – 9 hours.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Carry out departmental duties and treatment programs that are delegated for adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patients.
  • Inform the Department Manager or Senior Therapist of any equipment malfunctions or perceived safety hazards.
  • Clean, maintain and stock supplies.
  • Maintain a clean gym area and treatment rooms.
  • Assist with care of patients under the direct supervision and direction of the Physical or Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • Inform the therapist of any ill response by the patient and maintain patient confidentiality and modesty at all times.
  • Assist in directing volunteers.
  • Transport patients to and from physical and occupational departments.
  • Ensure safety of self and patient when transporting/transferring patients.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma/GED

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Healthcare experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk and climb stairs without assistive device and to maintain balance despite sudden load in order to support patient from falling.
  • Ability to meet physical demands characterized at the heavy level defined by 1993 Leonard Matheson and Ministry of Labor.
  • Ability to lift and reach with arms sufficiently to lift patient's arm and leg during therapeutic treatment program.
  • Sensation of touch and manual dexterity to be able to palpate muscle tension or to monitor patient pulse.
  • Visual acuity to observe patient's gross and fine motor movements in order to analyze these movements and to read all patient monitors.
  • Ability to speak clearly enough to instruct patients and families.
  • Ability to hear at a conversational level to understand patient's description of symptoms and response to treatment.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
