Under the supervision of the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Laboratory Services and Lead CLA performs patient phlebotomy, laboratory assistance and other duties as needed. Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for inpatient phlebotomy for all inpatient units.
  • Responsible for outpatient phlebotomy of all ages: neonatal, pediatric and adult.
  • Responsible for order entry of laboratory tests including Meditech, Metricom and any other application as needed.
  • Generates ABN’s and provides instruction for patients.
  • Enters patient testing into Meditech, validates order completeness, generates bar code labels
  • Adds specimen label to patient requisition to aid coding and billing process.
  • Provides outpatients with information and instructional materials relating to their procedure and test.
  • Proficient in skin puncture (finger-stick) collection techniques.
  • Prepares pathology and cytology specimens for dispatch to UMASS Pathology: verifies order/specimen accuracy, logs manifest, communicates STATs with courier service.
  • Properly labels tubes and containers as outlined in Specimen Collection manual.
  • Assisting in the lab: receiving and centrifuging specimens.
  • Performs H. Pylori breath testing including patient preparation and specimen collection.
  • Assists lab techs by performing Rapid Strep testing and resulting as needed.
  • Assists lab techs by performing Occult blood testing and resulting as needed.
  • Assists lab techs by performing Urine pregnancy testing and resulting as needed.
  • Assists lab manager by performing glucometer surveys and meter downloading as needed.
  • Occasional off-site phlebotomy performed for Medwork’s clients.
  • Responsible for generating a variety of Laboratory Reports and delivering to appropriate locations.
  • Responsible for answering all phone calls coming into the Laboratory including calls from the general public and calls from nursing and other clinical areas.
  • Communicates with outpatients: provides them with directions to and from testing areas and any other assistance they may need.
  • Performs other related duties as required: generating and faxing reports to doctor's offices.
  • Responsible for tracking and ordering phlebotomy supplies.
  • Performs clerical functions in the Laboratory using established procedures and guidelines.
  • Reviews Safety, Infection Control, Human Resources and OSHA policies and appropriate Laboratory Manuals on an annual basis.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Must meet the regulations 105 CMR 180.180 or a graduate from a certified program in phlebotomy.
  • Up to six months of on the job phlebotomy training.

Preferred

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Experience/Skills:
Preferred:

  • Previous experience with hospital order entry systems preferred.
  • Computer knowledge and experience preferred.
  • One year of experience working in a Hospital setting preferred.
  • OR equivalent combination of above

Performs EKG testing training and competency provided. Caregiver trained appropriately on EKG device and procedure.
