Job Description

OF POSITION:

  • The General Lab Phlebotomist collects clinical laboratory samples to be tested in the clinical laboratory. The General Lab Phlebotomist will collect blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques, urine samples, and other specialty collections.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Use and maintain Mobile devices and Spectralink phones according to policy.
  • Utilizes departmental communication platforms.
  • Meets blood culture contamination rate of < 1.0%, if applicable campus/area. Utilize blood diversion devices.
  • Meets rejected specimen rate of < 2%, if applicable campus/area.
  • Utilizes proper hand washing.
  • Assists clerks with receiving specimens, answering the phone and other duties when available.
  • Meets established turnaround times for STAT, In AM, Timed, and routine orders.
  • Practice methods of preventing infection during venipuncture/skin puncture.
  • Utilizes laboratory computer system, collection lists, kiosk system, and pending logs.
  • Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
  • Recognizes anatomic regions and components of the circulatory system.
  • Keeps blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized.
  • Performs specialized collection procedures i.e. crossmatch blood cultures, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen collection, PKU/T4, therapeutic phlebotomy.
  • Ensures proper patient identification, using two unique identifiers.
  • Performs blood collection procedures using skin (capillary) puncture and venipuncture.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in a like or similar position is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, family, peers and medical personnel.
  • Able to read and understand graphs and performance improvement data sheets.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
