The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomists alsofacilitatethe collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g.urine). Very often the patient’s only contact with the medical laboratory is the phlebotomist. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomist to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens.

APRNcaregiver in this position worksMonday-Fridayfrom1000AM –630PM, as neededMartin South Hospital will be the primary work location, but floating to other sites may berequired, as needed.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Collect blood, processspecimensand perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.
Perform blood-collection-related techniquesfrom patients of all age groups, such as blood glucosetolerancetests and blood cultures.
Prepare samples for testing andmanagespecimens in the laboratory information system.
Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.
Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of college or equivalent
Six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing
