Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

Under general supervision of the Administrative Director of Laboratory, the Phlebotomist is responsible for collection, reception and distribution of specimens. Performs various clerical duties including reporting and client supplies distribution, performing limited specimen analysis as trained, under the direction of the Pathologist and Laboratory Director. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to specific patient populations that are served, including the following age groups: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks.
  • Performs departmental tasks such as: restocking, taking temperatures, centrifuging specimens, etc.
  • Utilizes appropriate patient identification process using two identifiers. Compares information on patient armband to the lab test order to confirm a match. Takes appropriate corrective action to resolve any discrepancies prior to specimen collection.
  • Appropriately labels all tubes and containers with required elements in the presence of the patient.
  • Organizes workload appropriately to: collect all specimens, transport to the laboratory, receive and distribute specimens in a timely manner.
  • Collects chain of custody drug screens per established procedure.
  • Enters test orders. Keeps work area neat and clean.
  • As workload dictates, both assigned shift and work station may be changed.
  • Adheres to infection prevention protocols with every patient encounter.
  • Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct and all HMH policies.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS

All positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members. Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Some college credits including biology or chemistry and/or successful completion of military basic medical laboratory procedure course preferred.
  • Experience: One year of hospital laboratory experience preferred
  • Licensure/Certification: None required. Successful completion of a Phlebotomy certification program with national registry preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent: sitting, standing, walking, & reaching.
  • Occasional: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, & squatting,
  • Visual and hearing acuity required; color vision required for perceiving colors of solutions. Work is inside, with good ventilation and comfortable temperature.
  • Possible exposure to: toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens.
