Job Description

Directs phlebotomy personnel, performs quality assurance studies, maintains confidential personnel records, and orders laboratory tests for analysis in an effort to promote the provision of high-quality health care services. The Phlebotomy Coordinator reports to the Laboratory Supervisor and oversees the Phlebotomy Charge Technicians, Phlebotomists, and a Phlebotomy Trainee, maintains communication with managers and supervisors regarding phlebotomy operations, promotes effective relationships within the hospital, and adheres to policies, procedures, and legal guidelines. Other responsibilities include maintaining employee payroll and counseling documentation, maintaining inventory, demonstrating initiative in adapting to change, and consistently exhibiting a professional manner in the approach to job related duties.

1. Program Management
2. Directs phlebotomy personnel to ensure that samples are collected as requested. Performs quality assurance studies toward ensuring an acceptable departmental productivity level without a significant error rate. Maintains confidential personnel records in order to provide the employee with an accurate measurement of his or her progress during counseling/evaluation processes.
3. Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently in an effort to organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of laboratory service customers. Maintains documentation regarding employee counseling, payroll, and patient/visitor incidents. Maintains inventory needs and avoids duplication of energy and services whenever possible.

5. Consistently exhibits a professional manner, appearance, and performance in the approach to job related duties in an effort to maintain high standards in the delivery of quality health care services.
6. Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
7. Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions, in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to the working environment.
8. Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within the policy and legal guidelines of the hospital and laboratory in decision making processes and in the performance of procedures.
9. Maintains a keen knowledge of job responsibilities with an ongoing effort of continuing education to ensure high quality health care utilizing compassion, understanding, and respect. Knowledge is also structured to avoid waste through conservation of all valuable materials in a prudent and efficient manner. Maintains communication with managers and supervisors regarding phlebotomy operations.

Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes to include patient sample verification, ordering of laboratory tests for analysis, and distributing samples to laboratory sections for testing while following established policies in an effort to ensure high patient care standards.

12. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.

Experience - 3 years as a phlebotomist and 1 year supervisory experience

Education - High School or equivalent

Training - Completion of a phlebotomy course

Licensure - Valid LA Driver's license; Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA Certification/License.
