Job Description

The Phlebotomist 1 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills.

1. Compliance / Safety
   1. Properly labels the blood tubes immediately after collection.
   2. Follows all infection control procedures and proper protocol for maintaining a sterile site for collection of blood samples.
   3. Understands the protocol for proper patient identification and the Lab's use of two distinct identifiers in that process.
   4. Informs Manager or Supervisor of adverse phlebotomy events to allow for interventions and/or patient care events to be undertaken.
   5. Has completed required TB skin tests as mandated by Employee Health in a timely manner.
   6. Adheres to infection control practices.
2. Team work / Customer service
   1. Completes phlebotomy rounds and assignments with little need of direction; demonstrates good time management skills and uses downtime to department advantage by assisting coworkers.
   2. Carries appropriate share of workload; includes assisting with answering the telephone, assisting in other areas where qualified, and displaying excellent communication skills with team members and customers alike.
   3. Acts to promote teamwork in order to better serve our patients while remaining positive in both verbal and non-verbal communications; remains positive in the face of adversity and demonstrates he ability to work effectively as part of a team to better serve our patients.
   4. Demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in all interactions with our patients, visitors and customers; polite and friendly manner is maintained in all interactions.
   5. Adjusts personal schedule, when requested, to meet departmental needs.
3. Productivity
   1. Strives to assure that blood samples are collected in a timely manner in both Inpatient and Outpatient settings.
   2. Organizes work and utilizes time to accomplish duties in an efficient manner.
   3. Carries out assignments and workload with minimal direction; uses downtime to department advantage by assisting coworkers.
   4. Keeps work areas and phlebotomy trays neat, clean and free of clutter.
4. Technical Skills
   1. Demonstrates proper blood collection techniques, including order of collection.
   2. Demonstrates the knowledge necessary for the proper use of the various blood collection devices and safety devices.
   3. Works to ensure specimen integrity related to specimen requirements, proper fill volumes, timed collections, collection site, etc.
   4. Demonstrates the protocol for drawing blood above IV sites and knowledge of maintaining specimen integrity under such conditions.
5. Other duties as assigned
   1. Adheres to hospital policy with regards to breaks, usage of PTO
   2. Reports to work on time, as scheduled; when necessary, reports tardiness to appropriate person.
   3. Attends all required mandatory educational sessions.
   4. Maintains a professional appearance, according to job requirements, at all times.
   5. Operates equipment and performs job-related duties in a safe manner. Responds appropriately to fire, safety and disaster situations. Utilizes PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the appropriate manner for optimal protection.
   6. Assumes personal responsibility for ongoing continuing education and professional development.
   7. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience - Entry-level with no current hospital experience OR Previous experience is more than 1 year in the past
Education - High School diploma or equivalent
Training - Graduate of an accredited Phlebotomy, MLA or MA program (or equivalent) OR Certification-eligible as a Phlebotomist, MLA or MA
