The Pharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a Licensed Pharmacist to support the safe, efficient, and ethical delivery of pharmaceutical services in Kono district hospital with inpatient and outpatient care. The role includes medication dispensing, inventory control, ward-based support, and ensuring compliance with hospital protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Dispensing and Patient Care

  • Dispense medications accurately under pharmacist supervision, ensuring prescriptions are complete and appropriate for the patient’s condition.
  • Reinforce patient counseling provided by the pharmacist to ensure safe medication use and storage.
  • Support continuity of treatment for psychiatric and comorbid medical conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Ensure all dispensed medications are properly labeled, packaged, and documented.
  • Ensure that prescriptions are properly reviewed before dispensing such that the right medications are given to the right patients, through the right route of administration in the right dose and regimen

2. Inventory, stock management and Supply Chain Management

  • Maintain accurate stock records and conduct routine stock checks to prevent shortages and overstocking.
  • Record medication utilization, wastage, and expiries; promptly report discrepancies.
  • Monitor and enter last mile delivery of dispensed medications and consumables into the R&R (Reporting and Requisition) template accurately and on time.
  • Follow up with the warehouse team and pharmacist to ensure timely delivery of requested items.
  • Remove and document expired or damaged medicines promptly and store in a safe, clean and dry space for onward processing.
  • Carry out monthly inventory and reconciliation exercises preceding monthly pharmacy requisitions to Dorma Distribution center.
  • Ensure that the pharmacy storage area is organized and temperature maintained to meet good storage conditions.
  • Carry out receptions of medications supplied by PIH and provide a feedback report in real time.

3. Medication Control and Accountability

  • Maintain strict control and accountability for all medications, including narcotics, psychotropic, and other essential medicines.
  • Ensure all medication requisitions and returns from wards are documented and reconciled with stock records.
  • Report any divergence from protocols, medication losses, or incidents immediately to the pharmacist and all other relevant supervisors.
  • Provide Bi weekly stock status showing stock out, pre-rupture, sleeping stock and overstock items.

4. Clinical and Interdisciplinary Support

  • Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to ensure correct medication availability in wards, administration and documentation.

5. Quality Assurance and Safety

  • Promote rational use of medicines and adherence to treatment guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards in medication dispensing.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment.
  • Ensure emergency medications are available at all times, including during night and weekend shifts.

6. Reporting and Administration

  • Prepare and submit monthly consumption and R&R reports to the Pharmacy Supervisor.
  • Provide Bi weekly stock status showing stock out, pre-rupture, sleeping stock and overstock items
  • Ensure data accuracy and integrity in all pharmacy records.
  • Support internal and external audits by maintaining complete documentation.
  • Mentor other pharmacy technicians on pharmacy best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the pharmacist.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a hospital setting; Experience with psychiatric medications is an advantage.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • High ethical standards and confidentiality in handling patient and medication data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Professional proficiency in English; knowledge of other local languages is an asset.
  • Must not hold dual employment.
  • Flexible and available to carry additional task assigned to the successful candidate
