Job Description

Responsibilities:

  4. Understands the components of the Patient Medication Profile and uses this information for problem resolution.
  5. Understands and utilizes pharmacy software to participate in workflow and assist in resolving medication-related issues
  6. Uses computer system to maintain accuracy of medication documentation or charges, charging for dispensed medications and crediting medications that are returned to the pharmacy.
  7. Assists the Pharmacists in the Operation of the Drug Distribution System and participates in staff huddles.
  8. Works well with others and as a part of a team.
  9. Maintains Organization and Cleanliness of Work Environment.
  10. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities in the ACUTE CARE/INFUSION AREAS:

  • Knows medications on audit high risk medication list and always refers these meds to a pharmacist for checking per pharmacy protocol.
  • Utilizes pharmacy technology to compound, prepack and barcode medications for dispensing to patients.
  • Accurately and securely pulls and refills controlled substances.
  • Delivery/Security of Medications including refilling ADCs and entering correct expiration date.
  • Uses sterile technique and follows current USP guidelines and procedures for preparing IV admixtures, including hazardous drugs upon proper training.
  • Able to maintain and troubleshoot pharmacy printers, copier, and fax machine (change paper and ink/ribbon, reset printers, etc.)

Additional Responsibilities in the RETAIL/OUTPATIENT AREAS:

  • Serves patients with a professional, caring demeanor for quality patient experience.
  • Gather patient information and process prescriptions requested by the patient.
  • Prioritizes and fills prescriptions based on specific situations and exhausts all efforts to communicate with the patient regarding any issue or delay in filling their prescriptions.
  • Responsible for investigating and resolving third-party payment issues.
  • Accurately count and close each register nightly, create daily deposit form, make change for bank each morning, maintain accuracy when counting money at each transaction.
  • Works together to ensure all supplies are adequately stocked each day and inventory is maintained for use.

Additional Responsibilities for MEDICATION HISTORY TECHS:

  • Understands the components of patient medication profiles. Obtains/documents patient home medication lists, allergy information, and preferred pharmacy in the electronic medical record from relevant sources.
  • Communicates information to a pharmacist and/or other members of the healthcare team and directs medication-related questions to a pharmacist.
  • Assists in ensuring the continuing operation and performance of the Medication History Technician program (i.e. participation in ongoing education, training new hires, etc), as assigned.
  • Maintains logs and any other monitoring forms/documentation required as assigned.
  • Works assigned schedule in the ED, surgical home, or assigned floor follow up and focuses on assigned patients.
  • Communicates follow-up tasks if unable to fully complete the medication history. Completes any and all follow-up tasks from the day before if/when there is no other medication history technician assigned to floor patients.
