Assists pharmacist and prepares medications to be dispensed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist according to State and Federal law.

Experience

  • 1 year of experience as a pharmacy technician in a pediatric hospital pharmacy environment with focused IV Admixture assignments - OR- Successful completion of the CHOA IV Admixture certification training program, with > 9 months documented proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National certification as a pharmacy technician or a 2-year college degree is preferred.

  • High School Diploma

  • Proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics are required.
  • Proficient in all job functions as described in the Pharmacy Technician I job description.
  • Knowledge of medical/pharmaceutical terminology.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to learn and use computer systems are required.
  • Knowledge of Omnicell operations.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills.
  • Assignment to majority of shift work (>90%) in Pharmacy IV admixture.
  • Successful completion of the CHOA IV Admixture certification training program, with > 9 months documented proficiency.

Job Responsibilities

Processes medication orders and dispenses medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to ensure safe and appropriate provision of medications to patients.

  • Fills all physician orders accurately and efficiently and obtains a pharmacist check prior to all dispensing.
  • Consistently fills all medication stock orders ( i.e. Urgent Care, Specialty Care Centers, ancillary nursing units, Omnicell, floor stock, Anesthesia and Operating room code trays, etc.) completely and accurately, obtains a pharmacist check prior to dispensing.

Assists pharmacists by anticipating and prioritizing the workload accurately and efficiently.

  • Organizes and prioritizes phone calls, window traffic and work load effectively and keeps the pharmacist informed.
  • Maintains a smooth work flow in area by utilizing problem-solving skills.

Distributes medications in a timely manner.

  • Distributes medications to nursing units.
  • Utilizes discharge and transfer reports as directed.
  • Prioritizes orders such as Now/Stat, ASAP and routine to assure appropriate turnaround time.

Prepares and compounds all medications using proper techniques.

  • Accurately prepares and compounds all medications.
  • Prepares products cost-effectively and minimizes waste.
  • Properly logs all medications.

Maintains adequate supplies of all stock items in a clean and organized environment

  • Maintains adequate par levels of supplies and documents needed medications on the “Want Book”. Follows up with the next shift on any outstanding medication needs.
  • Prepares and maintains adequate supply of stock solutions.
  • Maintains par levels of assigned prepackaged medications.
  • Restocks area at end of shift to assure adequate supplies for the next shift.
  • Checks assigned stock sections of the pharmacy monthly for expired medications, pulls expired medications and flags medications that will expire within the next 3 months. Documents when complete.
  • Maintains an organized and clean environment.

Completes and maintains pharmacy records

  • Documents all assigned QA responsibilities (e.g. hood cleaning, refrigerator temp, and area of inspection).

Maintains individual competence and develops professional practice skills.

  • Participates in required departmental training, education and certification.
  • Completes all required orientation/training checklist(s) and modules.
  • Completes projects to develop professional skills and achieve goals of the department.
  • Uses extra time advantageously to help others or to work on department projects.
  • Contributes to the achievement of department goals and objectives through effective participation.
  • Exhibits proficient performance in at least two work areas.

Precepts new and existing staff members.

  • Participates in orientation and training of new and existing employees.
  • Uses effective educational techniques in all training and educational activities.
  • Identifies performance deficiencies of new employees and provides feedback/training in an effort to correct deficiencies.
  • Routinely provides feedback of employee’s progress to the Education Pharmacist or Team Leaders.

Demonstrates leadership and skills.

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess situations and bring issues or concerns to the attention of a pharmacist or team leader.
  • Demonstrates effective time management project management and inventory control skills.

Prepares and compounds medications by using aseptic technique.

  • Accurately prepares and compounds medications including IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy solutions, and drips.
  • Demonstrates aseptic technique when preparing sterile IV preparations and obtains yearly re-certification of aseptic technique.
  • Prepares and maintains adequate supply of stock solutions.
  • Documents on all IV compounding logs as appropriate.
  • Uses available technology (IVsoft, Baxa compounder)
