Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - Ambulatory Care, ACT Circle Pharmacy-100% -(26004143)

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a 100% pharmacy technician to join our ACT Pharmacy team. Under general supervision of the pharmacist, coordinates and performs the technical activities of the ACTS Pharmacy location. Under general supervision of technician supervisor, carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas. Provides functional supervision as required. This pharmacy location performs high-volume central fill and mail dispensing on behalf of all UI Health Care Ambulatory Pharmacies. Additionally, the pharmacy also performs medication adherence packaging services using an automated packaging machine, non-sterile compounding, and home delivery of prescriptions. ACTS has an open-door pharmacy for patients to pick up medications directly from this location.

Non-certified technicians must achieve certification within 1 year of employment. Valid drivers license is required.

This position will work 8-hour shifts scheduled between the hours of 6:00 am - 8:00 pm Monday-Friday, and 0800-1630 up to every other weekend. Occasional holidays may be required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Fill/refill prescriptions
    • Read label for accuracy and correct as needed.
    • Label and package the correct medication.
    • Notate appropriate lot number and expiration for specialty drugs.
    • Sign appropriate drugs out of high cost and controlled substance logbooks.
    • Include appropriate ancillary materials with patient prescription orders including but not limited to supplies needed to administer drug, supplies needed to dispose of administration materials, Specialty Pharmacy Welcome Materials, Proof of Delivery documentation, etc.
    • Coordinate services from other UI Healthcare Ambulatory Care Pharmacies including but not limited to services such as adherence packaging and Clinical Cancer Center medications.
  • Work closely with pharmacy staff (Prior Authorization, Patient Management, and Ambulatory Pharmacy teams) along with interdisciplinary staff to accurately fulfill patient orders with a high level of attention to detail and focus on superior customer service
    • Locate over the counter medications to include in patient orders.
    • Locate ancillary products to include in patient orders.
    • Properly process patient orders through pharmacy cash register system according to required and often complex billing requirements (copay assistance, grants, medically billed, etc.).
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing, shipping, and courier, and delivery according to established policies and procedures.
    • Generate appropriate shipping labels according to the desired shipping method.
    • Properly package refrigerated items according to cold chain shipping requirements.
  • Assist with the receipt and stocking of daily drug orders to appropriate areas in the pharmacy.
  • Utilize and maintain the ScriptPro Robot
    • Fill cells/cassettes.
    • Clean cells/cassettes
    • Map brand changes/assign drugs to cells
    • Return unwanted prescriptions to cells.
    • Daily maintenance
  • Answer phone lines to assist patients and other hospital staff with various requests.
    • Assist with transferring of drug to/from other in-house pharmacies.
    • Other requests as needed and appropriate.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities.
    • Return to stock medications that have not been picked up by patients.
    • Monitor/order prescription filling and shipping supplies.
    • Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  • Generate and/or maintain (including filing) appropriate records related to prescription dispensing such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including:
    • Conduct weekly and monthly inventories.
    • Order replacement supplies from internal source.
    • Audit records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.
    • Resolve discrepancies on issuance forms.
  • Operate a company delivery vehicle to transport and deliver prescription medications to patients’ residences, ensuring accurate, timely, and secure handling of all items in accordance with pharmacy policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and provide regular feedback on processes and procedures.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in on-the-job training of new technicians.
  • Coordinate technical activities with other members of team.
  • Assist with other duties as workload allows.
  • Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and educational requirements.

Qualifications

Certified Technician:

  1. Registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy at the time of hire.
  2. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  3. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  4. Experience
    1. Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
    2. Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program

Trainee Technician:

  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.

  2. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.

  3. High school diploma or the equivalent.

  4. Experience:

    1. Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR

    2. Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

  • Special Qualifications:
    • Possession of the class (class A, B, C or D) of driver’s license appropriate to vehicle driven and/or materials transported required.
  • Highly Desired Qualifications:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives

  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
    • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
    • Experience working in team environment
    • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
    • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
    • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
    • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
