Job Description

The individual in this position will assist in preparing, packaging, delivering, and charging of medications, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Position duties include the following activities:

  • fill and label medications
  • stock medications into pharmacy inventory
  • restock automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs)
  • maintain adequate medication stock levels and proper storage of medications
  • deliver medications to patient care areas
  • attend to medication requests and phone calls
  • prepare IV sterile admixture solutions and IV products
  • assist in Pharmacy quality assurance activities
  • comply with state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission standards and Tenet and hospital policies and procedures
  • assist pharmacists in performing various duties as assigned
  • The individual’s responsibilities include the following activities: a) accurately fill medication orders with correct strength, dosage form, and quantity in a timely manner, b) assure all medications are checked by a pharmacist prior to dispensing, c) respond appropriately to requests for STAT orders, routine orders, department requests, and ADC stock out bulletins, d) refill emergency crash carts, boxes, and kits accurately and timely, e) accurately stock ADCs in a timely manner, f) prepackage and label oral medications and extemporaneous preparations, g) prepare IV sterile admixture solutions and IV products accurately consistent with IV policies and procedures (USP797 and USP800), h) restock medications in IV room and conform to IV cleaning schedule, i) complete monthly medication inspections as assigned, j) maintain quality assurance logs with proper documentation and notify Supervisor of any deviations from standards, k) adhere to pharmacy technician operational workflow and delivery schedule, l) follow proper process for handling of controlled substances and report any variances to Supervisor or pharmacist-in-charge, m) ensure patient accounts are properly charged, n) acts under the supervision of facility DEA registrant or other Licensed Independent Practitioners while performing medication management related activities at a remote site commonly owned and operated by the Hospital o) other duties as assigned.
  • Organization/Work Role: Prioritizes workload. Completes work in a timely manner. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Shares responsibility for ordering and stocking medication and keeping the department clean. Maintains a calm demeanor during busy or crisis situations. Utilizes personal protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemical, radiation and infectious hazards.
  • Professional: Actively participates in department management by providing input at meetings and reading communication. Mentors new and less experienced staff and students. Uses policy and procedure manuals and other reference material to ensure proper course of action.
  • Quality Improvement: Identifies, proposes solutions and assists in implementation of ideas for improvement in patient care and departmental / hospital operations. Participates in the successful implementation of change. Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to decrease waste in medication. Participates in department QI as requested.
  • Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned
  • Special Skills:
    • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional periods of above average pressure.
    • Must have basic computer skills.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Must be willing to work in all areas of the pharmacy services as assigned.
    • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with team members required.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent GED
    • Experience: Two (2) years of hospital pharmacy experience.
    • Licensure/Certification: Licensed in the State of Arizona as a Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technician certification
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience: Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred. IV experience preferred. Good organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills, and basic computer skills preferred.
