Pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in various activities of the pharmacy department, including the preparation, distribution, and storage of pharmaceuticals for the patients of Baystate Medical Center and Baystate Health System. The pharmacy technician is responsible for the essential functions and responsibilities outlined in this document, noting every employee is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Leadership has the right to change or add to the job responsibilities based on changes in workflows or processes as necessary.
Employee is expected to: Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of Baystate Medical Center/Baystate Health (BH)Retail and Ambulatory Pharmacy Services. This knowledge includes the values, policies, and procedures of BMC/BH and BH Retail and Ambulatory Pharmacy Services.
Understand major job responsibilities and performance factors that help meet the responsibilities which include: Accepts and follows direction from pharmacist; prepares patient specific orders for review by a licensed pharmacist, assists in maintenance of drug inventory (to include CIII-CV controlled substances), Customer Service & Teamwork; Attendance. Operates and troubleshoots equipment and pharmacy systems. Receives and refers incoming calls for the department and handles pharmacy POS/pick-up transactions. Serves as pharmacy representative inside and outside of the pharmacy department.
The incumbent is required to achieve Massachusetts Technician Registration after completing 500 hours of work experience/training.

Job Requirement:
1) Accepts and follows directions from a pharmacist and follows the pharmacist workflow process.
2) Accurately prepares patient-specific orders by counting and labeling new and refill prescription orders; prepares products within appropriate time standards; and enables pharmacist review of all work.
3) Operates and troubleshoots automated dispensing machines, Baystate and Pharmacy computer systems, as necessary.
4) Accurately fills/refills controlled substance medications, logs, and confirms correct inventory count according to policy/procedure
5) Accurately maintains drug inventory (re-orders needed medications, performs cycle counting/updating, receiving, and putting away wholesaler deliveries)
6) Processes new and refill prescription orders, accurately bill patients' insurance if applicable, and refer any issues to the pharmacist.
7) Customer Service & Teamwork:
Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team on a regular basis. Serves as a pharmacy representative inside and outside of the pharmacy department. Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients and confidentiality of patient information. Receives and refers incoming calls for the department; handles pharmacy POS/pick up area; accepts, reviews and responds to emails.

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
