Job Description

The Pharmacy Resident plays a key role in advancing clinical pharmacy practice while developing the skills necessary to function as an effective, independent practitioner. This residency emphasizes clinical proficiency, professional growth, and active participation in pharmacy operations and patient care.
As stated in the job description, the resident “conducts practice-related investigations and develops skills in educating health professionals and the community” and “demonstrates the ability to function effectively as a staff pharmacist.”
This is a full-time, immersive PGY‑1 residency designed to prepare pharmacists for advanced practice roles.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a self-directed, motivated learner under the guidance of the Residency Program Director and preceptors.
  • Complete all Meritus PGY‑1 Residency Program requirements and ASHP‑accredited educational outcomes.
  • Perform timely PharmAcademic evaluations for learning experiences and preceptors.
  • Design and complete a major research project, including IRB submission, poster presentation at ASHP Midyear, and manuscript development.
  • Prepare and dispense medications, verify orders, and oversee medication preparation in accordance with USP 797 standards.
  • Ensure safe, appropriate, and cost‑effective medication therapy; monitor for interactions, contraindications, allergies, and dosing accuracy.
  • Participate in antimicrobial stewardship and medication reconciliation activities.
  • Attend monthly Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee meetings and complete assigned minute‑taking duties.
  • Attend required staff meetings and relevant preceptor‑led meetings.
  • Document daily clinical interventions in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Engage in teaching activities, including in‑services, case presentations, and formal lectures; co‑precept IPPE/APPE students and fully precept one APPE student during the latter half of the residency.
  • Participate in the Shenandoah University Teaching Certificate Program.  
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required.
  • Experience: Pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Licensure:
    • Must obtain Maryland pharmacist licensure by August 1 of the residency year.
    • Failure to obtain licensure by October 1 results in dismissal.
    • Unlicensed pharmacists must work under direct supervision and may not perform pharmacist‑only duties.
  • Certifications:
    • BLS required per policy.
    • ACLS and PALS required upon completion of the first available courses.
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with pharmacy staff, physicians, nurses, and patients.
    • Meets ASHP requirements for residency training.
