The Pharmacy Manager/Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for regulatory compliance. This role ensures safe, effective, and legally compliant dispensing of medications while leading pharmacy staff, maintaining high-quality patient care, and optimizing workflow and business performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Ensure full compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws, Board of Pharmacy regulations, DEA policies, and all applicable standards.
  • Maintain accurate and complete pharmacy records (controlled substances, inventories, logs, temperature records, etc.).
  • Manage controlled substance compliance including ordering, receiving, storage, dispensing, reconciliation, and reporting of discrepancies.
  • Oversee pharmacy licensing, renewals, inspections, and audits.
  • Implement and monitor policies and procedures related to medication safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determines formulas and ingredients needed.
  • Monitors all posting onto the patient profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received.
  • Checks patient medication cassettes prior to delivery to patient care areas to ascertain that the correct drug, dosage form, schedule and strength is being dispensed.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Directs Pharmacy Department staff engaged in admixing, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients and other healthcare professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.
  • Assists in teaching programs (departmental, medical, nursing, community).
  • Endorses policies and procedures of the department and of the hospital.
  • Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in the work areas.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Enters data into the computer system (Pharmacy program), such as patient, prescribed medications and cost, and maintains patient profiles and charge system.
  • Instructs students and other medical staff on matters pertaining to the Pharmacy Department.
  • Reviews and monitors drug therapy that requires dosing adjustments as authorized by the physician.
  • Provides pharmaceutical care to all ages of patients from newborns to the elderly. Understands that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and knows where to find appropriate information.
  • Manages at least one to two (1-2) members of the Pharmacy Department staff on a daily basis.
  • Assists HR in the hiring process, trains staff, plans, assigns and directs work, addresses complaints and resolves problems.
  • Completes annual reviews for pharmacy staff.
  • Ensures that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by management.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Actively checks and responds to emails throughout the day.
  • Completes all mandatory education within given time-frame.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
  • Attends at least 75% of staff meetings; reviews all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Actively participates in the department’s quality improvement (QI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices and the employee handbook.
  • Communicates the mission, vision and values of the organization as well as the focus of the department.
  • Meets dress code standards for the department; appearance is neat and clean.
  • All Ferry County Health employees are required to maintain confidentiality in accordance with organizational policy, state and federal regulations, including not but limited to, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent.
  • Graduated from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Active and unrestricted WA State Pharmacist licensure.
  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education or subsequent training.
  • This is a safety sensitive positions and subject to RCW 49.44.240(3)(g).

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
