Occupational Summary

The pharmacy manager serves as a key member of the pharmacy leadership team. This person will coordinate and collaborate with all levels of representatives across multiple departments to drive organizational and departmental goals related to operations, cost savings, process improvement, standardization and compliance.

  • Leads the pharmacy operations program including automation, procurement and prepackaging.
  • Provides basic technical support for automated dispensing machines and other pharmacy computer programs.
  • Participates in the maintenance of pharmacy dictionaries including adding new drugs to the electronic health record (EPIC®) and Omnicell™.
  • Collaborates with Duke University Health System (DUHS) Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention team to provide direct oversight on local compliance and drug diversion efforts.
  • Completes essential human resource functions associated with staff supervision and team leadership.
  • Serves as a liaison between medical, nursing and allied health staff and the department of pharmacy for operational issues.
  • Works with the Director of Pharmacy and pharmacy leadership team to establish goals and objectives for operational programs and is responsible for implementation and monitoring within budgetary targets.
  • Supports the educational mission through training of pharmacy residents, students and pharmacy technician trainees and continuous professional growth.

Work Performed

  • Performs all duties of the Pharmacist-Manager as required by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.
  • Is proficient in the Willow Ambulatory pharmacy processing software as well as applicable point of sale systems and other technology driven workflow processes as appropriate.
  • Leads unit level Duke Quality System huddles on a daily basis and escalates issues as appropriate.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates pharmacy personnel including, but not limited to, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and cashiers.
  • Adheres to approved hospital and health system policies, standard practices of the profession and State and Federal laws.
  • Ensures that there is sufficient staff to provide excellent/efficient pharmacy services and makes specific assignments as appropriate.
  • All controlled substances usage is reviewed on a regular basis and discrepancies are resolved as soon as possible.
  • Maintains strict control over distribution and usage of governmentcontrolled products such as narcotics and barbiturates.
  • Ensures that records are kept for each prescription filled for pharmacy files, for control files on narcotics, poisons, habit-forming drugs or for billing records.
  • Ensures proper storage of all medications including those kept under temperature sensitive requirements.
  • Supervises inventory control of pharmacy stock to an acceptable turnover in order to minimize the amount of expired drugs.
  • Provides drug information, including adverse drug reactions and contraindications.
  • Supervises semiannual physical inventory process.
  • Implements and documents drug recalls in coordination with the DUHS Senior Recall Team where applicable.
  • Established policy and procedures which are followed in a timely manner concerning drug recalls and the documentation required detailing the disposition of such drugs.
  • Participates in QA activities within the department as well as throughout the hospital and health system.
  • Proactive in addressing issues or services requiring intradepartmental coordination.
  • Actively promotes the use of the QIP process and tools in order to establish and atmosphere of continual improvement.
  • Adheres to the unit level operating budget.
  • Manages both the capital equipment and operational budgets and ensures that the operation of department is within budget guidelines and providing explanation of significant variances.
  • Ensures that all patients are given verbal and written instruction (counseling) on all new prescriptions and that refill prescriptions areevaluated and patients are provided information (counseling) according to professional judgment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in community pharmacy and possesses administrative and management skills.
  • Great communication skills; Ability to motivate teams; Knowledge of Excel & Power point; Able to develop and manage relationships with customers; Experience planning and executing projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy required.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in a community pharmacy setting, with experience as a Pharmacist-Manager preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed in North Carolina as a Pharmacist required.
