Job Title: Pharmacy Department Manager, Certified Pharmacy Technician

General Function

The Pharmacy Manager, Certified Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the overall operation within assigned pharmacy department. Directly responsible for improvement of prescription count as well as patient count by promoting exceptional customer service and professional image within the community. Focus will also include improvement of profitability by practicing/implementing cost effective business practices, i.e. generic dispensing, drug purchasing, etc. Ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and Reports to: Pharmacist in Charge (PIC), Store Manager, District Pharmacy Leadership

Direct Reports: Certified Pharmacy Technician(s), Pharmacy Technician(s), Pharmacy Clerk(s), Pharmacy Support Staff

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a positive attitude and fosters teamwork, accountability, and excellent customer service.

  • Oversees daily workflow to ensure efficient and accurate prescription processing.

  • Supervises pharmacy technicians in compliance with state regulations, company policy, and scope of practice.

  • Coordinates staffing schedules and assists with payroll and labor optimization.

  • Provides onboarding, training, coaching, and performance feedback to technician staff.

  • Ensures Pharmacy staff maintain required licenses, registrations, and certifications.

  • Supports the Pharmacist in Charge by enforcing pharmacy procedures and operational standards.

  • Oversees non-clinical pharmacy operations including intake, data entry, insurance processing, and filing.

  • Assists with inventory ordering, receiving, recalls, expiration tracking, and organization.

  • Ensures HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality standards.

  • Assists with compliance audits and documentation as delegated.

  • Resolves customer concerns related to pharmacy operations.

  • Maintains pharmacy cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides technician coverage during staffing shortages or peak volume.

  • Assists pharmacists with administrative tasks as permitted by law.

  • Supports training of new associates and interns.

  • Assists in other store departments as needed.

  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification required. Active technician registration/license in the state of practice, in good standing. Minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience preferred. Prior supervisory or lead technician experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics

Strong understanding of technician scope of practice, pharmacy workflow, and applicable regulations. Excellent leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. High attention to detail and proficiency with pharmacy systems.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises pharmacy technician and support staff including work assignment, performance monitoring, training, and coaching. May recommend hiring, discipline, and scheduling actions in accordance with company policy and pharmacist oversight.

Working Conditions

Retail pharmacy setting requiring frequent standing, walking, repetitive motion, and use of pharmacy equipment. Work hours may vary based on operational needs.

Equipment Used to Perform Job

Pharmacy information systems, computers, printers, scanners, telephones, fax machines, copiers, automated dispensing equipment, and standard office tools.

Contacts

Daily interaction with pharmacists, pharmacy staff, customers, prescribers’ offices, suppliers, vendors, and store leadership.

Confidentiality

Accesses confidential and protected health information and maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and company policies.
