Job Description

Kern Medical has been a community cornerstone since its founding in 1867. Today, we are an acute care teaching center with 222 beds, offering the only advanced trauma care between Fresno and Los Angeles. Kern Medical offers a range of primary, specialty, and multi-specialty services including high-risk pregnancy care, inpatient psychiatric services integrated with county mental health programs, and a growing network of outpatient clinics providing personalize patient-centered wellness care. Kern Medical cares for 15,000 inpatients and 125,000 clinic patients a year.

  • Per Diem employees supplement department staffing needs, with no guarantee of minimum hours.
  • Must be willing and available to work four (4) shifts per six (6) week scheduling period.

Position: Pharmacist - Per Diem

Compensation:

The estimated pay for this position is $95.4914. This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification is the fully licensed level of professional pharmacy practice.

Essential Functions

  • Compounds, prepares, mixes, manufactures and dispenses drugs, devices and biologicals for inpatient and ambulatory patients.
  • Reviews drug orders and prescriptions for therapeutic propriety.
  • Maintains patient drug profiles of drug administration.
  • Provides appropriate drug information and guidance to health professionals and patients.
  • Maintains current information regarding poisons and hazardous substances.
  • Prices drug prescriptions and drug orders.
  • Supervises the preparation of charges for pharmacy services.
  • Inspects and maintains inspection records of medication storage on nursing units or public health service sites.
  • Dispenses or supervises the dispensing of floor stock drugs to nursing units.
  • Supervises and prepares parenteral hyper alimentation programs.
  • Prepares complex parenteral solutions such as intrathecal, hyper alimentation, antibiotics and chemotherapy.
  • Monitors all medication labeling for full legal compliance.
  • Monitors systems for drug storage and distribution in outlying clinics.
  • Supervises work of ancillary pharmacy personnel.
  • Dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100+ years of age.

Other Functions

  • Participates in educational programs for health professionals.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of patient medication carts for use on nursing units.
  • Supervises and controls the dispensing of narcotics, hypnotics and other "controlled" drugs.
  • Implements automation or computerization where applicable.
  • Performs other duties related to the work of pharmacy practice, as assigned.

Employment Standards

Graduation from a recognized school of Pharmacy. Possession of a valid license to practice Pharmacy issued by the California Board of Pharmacy and fulfillment of the continuing education requirements of the California Board of Pharmacy.

Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Provider certification within 60 days of employment. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Provider certification and competency.

Knowledge of

Pharmaceutical mathematics, chemistry, materia medica, and pharmaceutical manufacturing methods; current laws and regulations governing the operation of a pharmacy; drug costs;

Ability to

Prepare a wide variety of drugs and medications; communicate and work cooperatively with health professionals and the public; properly direct and supervise the work of ancillary pharmacy personnel.

If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.

Since our beginning in 1867, Kern Medical has served as an integral part of the community. Our 222-licensed bed acute care teaching hospital and outpatient clinics offer many services unavailable to the rest of the community. These services include:

- The only Level II Trauma program between Fresno and Los Angeles

As an academic teaching hospital, we are affiliated with UCLA and its David Geffen School of Medicine, with many of our physicians also holding faculty positions at UCLA. Our physician training ranges from three to five years with residencies in internal medicine, surgery, family practice, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry.
