Overview

Under the general direction of the Wellness Director and consistent with the Christian mission and the policies and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Catawba Valley, the Personal Trainer is responsible for all aspects of instructing, supervising, and reinforcing proper fitness techniques in the Fitness Center. As a member of the professional staff, the Personal Trainer is a constructive member of the YMCA whose major priority is to serve the members of the YMCA with the highest quality of programming and facilities available.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and instruct a variety of personal training and group training sessions for clients at an appropriate level and in the appropriate modality based on client’s wants, needs, and ability. Provide encouragement and expertise for the client in support of their health and well-being goals.
  • Administer, track, and evaluate health history questionnaires, fitness assessments, and other pre-participation documentation with regard to individual exercise programs.
  • Educates members in proper use of equipment.
  • Provides a cohesive approach to customer service and training that directly impacts the participant’s commitment and personal growth.
  • Maintains client list and records as required by the Program Director.
  • Promote and sell personal training programs and services.
  • Maintain required CECs and national certifications.
  • Follow Wellness Floor expectations when not scheduled for personal training, group training, or performing a consultation.
  • Conducting fitness instruction and orientation.
  • Critiquing, educating, and demonstrating proper techniques and form.
  • Interacting with members, training/educating members, calling members, cleaning equipment.
  • Maintaining a neat, clean, and pleasant environment in the Fitness Center.
  • Promoting YMCA programs and healthy living through personal example and member interaction.
  • Ensuring that all members are following rules, educating members on new information regarding fitness and related topics.
  • Attending scheduled Fitness Center staff meetings.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Wellness Instructor, Director on Duty, or Executive Director.
  • All YMCA staff are responsible for creating a safe, inclusive environment. This includes following all YMCA policies and procedures related to abuse prevention, reporting concerns or incidents immediately, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with youth and members.

Qualifications

  • Personal commitment to YMCA ideals.
  • Knowledge of strength and cardiovascular training principles.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Personal Trainer Certification through a nationally accredited organization including, but not limited to NETA, NASM, ACE, ACSM, AEA. Must hold an Aqua Specialty Certification if personal training is to be done in the pool.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention.
  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught and/or ability to demonstrate the movements and exercises.
  • Demonstrates customer services skills and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead an individual/group and motivate others to achieve their health and wellbeing goals.
  • Demonstrates ability working with all age groups and ability levels.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Degree in health and science or related field.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in the health and fitness field.
  • Knowledge of emergency policies and procedures for the facility.
  • Understanding of risk management issues and safety requirements for the facility.
