Assists the Staff Dietitians in ensuring that patients receive correct meals and proper nourishment in accordance with dietary prescriptions and individual meal selections.

General Responsibilities
- Guides patient in selecting menu items/preferences according to food preferences and prescribed diet, as ordered by physician. Provides basic nutrition information to patients about menus and menu selection.
- Utilize department software to relay messages and record patient diet information, answering telephones and taking messages as necessary. Tabulate census numbers to ensure food tallies are correct for dietary production areas as directed. (based upon pre-ordering purposes in areas where patient census may vary)
- Inventory, replenish and rotate stock in all assigned unit pantries according to established PAR levels.
- Maintain proper sanitation of unit pantries following current food safety regulations.
- Obtains information from newly admitted patients regarding usual dietary habits such as food and beverage preferences, allergies, dislikes, and any religious or cultural food restrictions, as needed. Records in patient’s file for use in menu planning.
- Document requisitions including: tube feeding, meals, guest tray 5 s, and other food as assigned.
- Assist in ongoing program of quality improvement for patient care and delivery of services to patients by conducting patient surveys and other quality monitors.
- Assembles patient food trays and nourishments, providing appropriate hot or cold foods as previously ordered by Personal Nutrition Assistant (PNA), dispensing beverages and necessary condiments on trays in accordance with individually prescribed menus. Also, prepares and places basic cold food, and in doing so, portions, counts, and weighs food items according to established procedures.
- Transports trays to patient care area by use of food carts. Delivers late food trays to patients as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Education
• High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
• College course work in Clinical Dietetics preferred.
Experience
Minimum of six months previous experience working with modified diets in a health care setting such as a hospital or senior-living facility or a minimum of 2 college credit hours from a nutrition class in order to interpret diet prescriptions.
One year previous experience working with customers directly or in phone center.
Special Skill / Aptitudes
- Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
- Demonstrated knowledge of personal computer and keyboard skills required in order to input a variety of dietary data.
- Ability to resolve problems and recommend alternatives related to dietary issues, ensuring that patient/client needs are addressed. Must escalate concern to supervisor if unresolved.
- Demonstrated ability to engage patients/clients in a positive manner, handling stressful circumstances, resolving in a manner consistent with positive outcomes.
Working Conditions:
- Normal office environment except when working in the patient care environment. Collecting menu preferences, delivering patient trays, etc. may result in exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
- Mostly sitting but some standing and lifting up to 30 pounds from floor to shoulder level or shoulder to floor.
- Ability to push carts containing food trays weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Works in assigned area under generally comfortable working conditions with exposure to splashing water, and cleaning agents. Occassional exposure to extreme working conditions (hot and cold).
