Job Objective:
Provides clinical and operational support to licensed nursing staff and providers in accordance with competency validation and delegation standards. Prepares supplies for case, sets up and maintains the sterile field, passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon, readies used instruments for the cleaning and re-sterilization process. Assists with set up and during and after delivery in the LDRP room; performs care activities under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Education:
Required: High school diploma, GED or higher level degree
Licensure/Certification:
Required: American Heart Association BLS
Preferred: Graduate of accredited Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician
Experience:
Required: Two (2) years of experience in maternity services, operating room or in a certified/licensed direct patient care role
Preferred: Obstetric Surgical Technician experience
Reports To: Director- Maternity Services Supervises: N/A Ages of Patients: Adolescent, Adult, Newborn Blood Borne Pathogens: High Potential
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Ability to scrub for OB/GYN cases, Ability to set up delivery tables and help nurse perp for vaginal deliveries, Basic knowledge of anatomy, Competency and knowledge of the surgical environment regarding traffic patterns and contamination of the sterile field, Electronic patient recordkeeping, Knowledge of obstetrical and gynecological surgical instrumentation, Knowledge of surgical asepsis and infection control, Strong communication skills
Essential Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2. Focuses on patient support, room readiness, supplies, and helping nurses manage high census and throughout.
3. Maintains aseptic technique in LDRP, support RN autonomy by offloading non-RN tasks.
4. Anticipates surgeons needs by review of preference card and procuring appropriate supplies prior to start of case.
5. Remains attentive to the progression of the case in order to anticipate nursing and surgical tech’s needs.
6. Verifies accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts with the LDRP nurse.
7. Properly disposes of all sharps and biohazardous waste.
8. Prepares instruments for cleaning and re-sterilization; assists with putting away supplies and room turnover.
9. Participates in training across different areas, such as Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Obstetrics Emergency Department.
10. Uses critical thinking regarding cost effectiveness when opening and using supplies.
11. Assists team in anticipating resources required/stocked for specific procedures.
12. Communicates effectively with patients, staff members and physicians.
13. Ensures that the policies, procedures and safety practices of LDRP and Hospital are reinforced.
14. Uses critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
