Job Description

  • Responsible for operating the Heart/Lung machine while safely maintaining patient cardiac output, tissue oxygenation, and hemodynamics during cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Administers medications and blood components through the extracorporeal circuit.
  • Responsible for drawing blood samples from the extracorporeal circuit and making adjustments to maintain normal blood gas parameters.
  • Maintains adequate anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Initiates ECMO and monitors patients while on ECMO.
  • Operates the cell saver.
  • Operates the HIPEC machine and AngioVac circuit.
  • Maintains quality controls for iStat and TEG as well as interpreting results.
  • Works closely with the other members of the operating room team to provide the safest and best possible care to patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
  • Build, maintain, prime and breakdown perfusion equipment, as needed.
  • Assembles and monitors ventricular assist device.
  • Graduate of an accredited Perfusion program
  • At least 2 years experience as a perfusionist.
  • Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • New Jersey State Perfusion License

  • Identify and lead quality improvement projects.

  • Leads ECMO training programs and annual competency assessments for perfusion, nursing, providers and others within the hospital.

  • Enters ECMO data in national registry.

  • Mentor/training for new perfusion team members and students, where applicable.

  • Inventory management.

  • Participates in perfusion and other leadership meetings, as needed.

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment along with having good communication skills.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time. Able to lift equipment/devices.
