Job Description



The Perfusionist is responsible for providing support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems. This role operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical situations where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary or circulatory function. In collaboration with physicians, the Perfusionist selects appropriate equipment and techniques and ensures proper management of physiological functions by monitoring necessary variables. The role may also involve administrative duties, including managing supplies, equipment maintenance, and inventory control.

Essential Functions
  • Operates extracorporeal circulation equipment to support or replace a patient’s cardiopulmonary and circulatory functions as prescribed by a physician.
  • Monitors and manages physiological variables to ensure proper perfusion during procedures.
  • Assesses and develops individualized patient care plans, collaborating with interdisciplinary team members to establish and achieve goals.
  • Maintains professional rapport with medical staff, patients, families, and ancillary departments, promoting effective communication and collaboration.
  • Demonstrates accountability for National Patient Safety Goals and hospital quality performance standards, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Provides technical and clinical support to unit staff, functioning as a resource and mentor for newly hired Perfusionists and students.
  • Assists with the selection, maintenance, and periodic inspection of perfusion equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
  • Manages inventory control, reordering supplies, and coordinating repairs or replacements as necessary.
  • Participates in ongoing education and training to remain current with advancements, regulations, and best practices in the field of perfusion.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for troubleshooting and resolving complex perfusion-related issues during procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • 0-2 years of clinical perfusion experience required
  • 1-2 years of experience with advanced perfusion technologies and techniques preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and cardiopulmonary systems related to extracorporeal circulation and perfusion support.
  • Proficient in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of extracorporeal circulation equipment and related technologies.
  • Strong critical thinking and situational awareness skills to assess patient status and make real-time adjustments during procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with physicians, surgical staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to maintain composure and sound judgment in high-pressure and emergent clinical environments.
Licenses and Certifications
  • American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
