Perfusion Assistant - Tufts Medical Center

The Perfusion Assistant is responsible for a multitude of tasks within the scope of the perfusion practice and is an ideal candidate to enter an accredited academic perfusion program.

Hours: 40 hours per week, Full-Time

Principal Duties and Essential Functions:

  • Organizes the requisite perfusion equipment within the cardiac and hybrid operating rooms.

  • Obtaining the surgeon-specific pharmaceuticals and disposable cannula for each room.

  • Rotates between all cardiac operating rooms to further assist the staff perfusionist.

  • Assists staff perfusionist with transport of patients on mechanical support devices. This can include intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), and ventricular assist devices (VAD).

  • Performs documentation and testing for all point-of-care devices, which includes daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly quality control/quality assurance metrics. Also assists in annual CAP surveys, as determined by the Director of Pathology.

  • Works in conjunction with the staff, vendors, and supply chain team for inventory management.

  • Maintain established cleaning schedule for perfusion equipment.

  • Using sterile technique, assemble disposable perfusion equipment, such as the heart-lung machine circuit, and the cell saver device. This also may include priming the circuit.

  • Performs cell saver management within cardiac and non-cardiac operating rooms. Eligible for the International Board of Blood Management Perioperative Blood Management Technologist exam after a minimum of 50 documented cases.

  • Ensures that all perfusion supply carts are fully stocked with appropriate materials.

  • Performs other related ancillary duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.

  • High school degree or equivalent required.

Experience:

  • This position is ideal for an individual who has a desire to attend an accredited academic perfusion program. Prior experience in health care setting is preferred but not required. An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Certifications and Licensure:

  • Basic Life Support certification.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a sterile operating room environment with the possibility of exposure to blood-borne pathogens, harmful anesthetic gases, and radiation.

  • Work requires regular walking, standing, significant pushing and carrying of equipment and lifting/positioning of patients.

  • Work hours may exceed scheduled hours, even when not on call, due to emergency cases or unforeseen circumstances.
