Medical Assistant provides supportive patient care functions for an assigned clinical area, under the supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients and families according to legal, organizational and professional standards. Some duties may be delegated to the MA by the physician or RN.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Clerical
- Review doctor's schedule; abstract as needed; print PVS for each patient and request relevant visit information
- Prepare and submit patient documents for scanning
- Monitor assigned inbox/basket and complete tasks (e.g., overdue results/letters)
- Schedule appointments and assist patients with specialty referrals and radiology testing
- Provide pre-printed patient educational materials as directed by provider
- Maintain proper disposal of confidential patient information (daily)
- Follow HIPAA policies and procedures regarding patient confidentiality
- Patient Care
- Monitor orders placed by physician and complete required tasks (e.g., waived testing, EKGs, specimen collection, spirometry, hearing, vision) and document accurately
- Document observations related to patient health status and report findings
- Room patients as exam rooms become available:
- Obtain demographic information, history, and chief complaint
- Verify patient allergies and document vital signs per policy
- Reconcile medications and update preferred pharmacy
- Provide patient education (learning method, language, interpreter needs, reading ability, visit-related education)
- Complete questionnaires as appropriate (e.g., lead, TB, flu, new patient intake)
- Prepare patient and room for physician visit
- Assist physician during exams and minor office procedures
- Perform daily living care as needed (e.g., emptying ostomy bags, changing diapers)
- Transport patients within facility as needed
- Perform waived testing (e.g., glucose, hemoccult, urine pregnancy), hearing & vision tests, sterilize instruments
- Collect and prepare lab specimens (urinalysis, pap smear, biopsy, cultures) and transport to lab
- Perform CPR as needed and assist during emergencies
- Departmental Maintenance
- Monitor supplies, medications, and forms; notify staff when reorders are needed
- Remove/report broken equipment to coordinator, supervisor, or manager
- Clean exam rooms daily and maintain documentation
- Track expiration dates and restock supplies to proper levels
- Perform sterilization and maintain logs (per training and delegation)
- Attend staff meetings
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace with minimal personal items
- QA / Regulatory
- Complete daily logs (per nursing staff):
- Waived testing logs (glucometer, urine dipstick, pregnancy tests) per CLIA standards
- Refrigerator and room temperature logs
- Eyewash station logs
- Other QA logs
- Maintain accurate, legal, and ethical documentation
- Ensure patient confidentiality
- Follow OSHA safety standards and proper biohazard disposal
- Perform frequent hand hygiene (use sanitizer or soap/water as required)
- Use gloves and PPE as needed
- Apply aseptic/sterile technique when required
- Verify equipment has current PM label before use
- Identify/report barriers to safe patient care and ensure safety
- Customer Service
- Deliver excellent customer service with high patient satisfaction
- Maintain mutual respect with all healthcare team members
- Collaborate effectively with other staff
- Demonstrate organizational mission and values

- Communicate appropriately with patients and team members

- Answer and direct calls professionally and calmly

- Ear Care Medication Administration
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill needed to administer safe and effective provide ear drop medications ordered by physician to facilitate the provider's practice and ear lavage. Which includes:

- Administers selected medication approved for the program
- Performs ear lavage as ordered

- Rocephin Medication Administration

- Explains procedure to patient
- Administers Rocephin approved for the program (250mg, 500mg, 1gm)

- Topical Medication Application
- Application with dressing with demonstrated competence

- Apply dry sterile dressing with application of antibiotic cream or ointment
- Suture removal for small incisions

- Neupogen (SQ)
- Aranesp (SQ)
- Procrit (SQ)
- Performs or assists with the following:
- Pulse Oximetry
- BRCA specimen collection
- Bone Marrow Collection
- Documentation of all medications and procedures

Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED; graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program or school
- BLS through American Heart Association
- This is an entry-level role. No experience is required with Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant; OR 1+ years of directly related experience as a medical assistant with no Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant. Employees in role before November 24, 2024 will be grandfathered based on previous experience requirement
- Those hired into this position must complete the review/skill validation program within 90 days of hire
- Computer experience
- Basic Medical/Nursing terminology
- Demonstrated ability to use equipment and related supplies for selected patient population
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification within 1 year of hire date
- Ambulatory Care experience
- EPIC experience
- Windows-based computer skills
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $18 - $32 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
