Job Description

Are you a people focused HR generalist who is driven by values, confident building relationships and ready to help shape a positive workplace culture?

Kalis Hospitality is looking for a People and Culture Advisor to join our team. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to grow their career in people and culture while working closely with managers across a busy Tasmanian hospitality business.

This role is about more than processes and policies. We are looking for someone who can build trust, coach managers, support our people and help create training, recruitment, onboarding and engagement programs that reflect who we are as a business.

About Kalis Hospitality

Kalis Hospitality is a Tasmanian family business with a strong focus on people, community and genuine hospitality. Across our venues, we are proud to create welcoming spaces for our guests and supportive workplaces for our teams.

Our head office is based at Cooley's Hotel, where this role will be primarily located. From there, the People and Culture Advisor will support managers and teams across the wider Kalis Hospitality group, including Kingston Hotel, Beltana Hotel, Black Buffalo Hotel, Cooley's Hotel, Beachfront Bicheno Hotel and Kings Meadows Hotel, as well as our 14 bottle shops across Tasmania.

While this role supports the whole business, it does not require regular travel. Most work can be done from head office, with occasional travel to other locations when needed, including potential visits to our northern venues.

As a family business, we do not operate like a large corporate organisation. We value practical thinking, honest conversations, strong relationships and people who are willing to get involved. Our values of community, growth, honesty and respect guide the way we work, make decisions and support our teams.

What we offer

We give our people everything they need to succeed. Join our Tasmanian hospitality community, a place where you can be yourself, share your ideas, support your personal growth and wellbeing, and be a valued member of an inspirational team.

You will be rewarded for your hard work with a range of benefits that support you throughout your career journey:

  • Free parking for added convenience.
  • Cashback at hundreds of stores via our SWAG employee app
  • Employee Perks Program with discounts across bottle shops, venues and accommodation
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program, providing confidential support for employees and their immediate family members
  • Opportunities to attend networking events, development days and further upskilling opportunities
  • A supportive family business environment where your ideas are valued
  • The opportunity to grow your HR career in a hands on generalist role
  • Ownership of meaningful people projects across recruitment, onboarding, training, engagement and workers compensation
  • The chance to help build smoother people processes and manager tools from the ground up
  • Exposure to a diverse hospitality business across hotels, venues and bottle shops
  • A people focused workplace guided by community, growth, honesty and respect
  • Occasional travel to other locations, with most work based from head office

About the role

As People and Culture Advisor, you will be based at our head office at Cooley's Hotel and work closely with managers across the Kalis Hospitality group. You will support our venues and bottle shops by providing practical people advice, building manager capability and helping create a positive, values led workplace culture.

You will take ownership of key people and culture processes, including recruitment, onboarding, induction training, staff engagement, workers compensation and return to work coordination. You will also help create practical tools and smoother ways of working that support managers in their day to day leadership.

A key part of the role will be advising and coaching managers so workplace matters are handled fairly, consistently and in line with the correct processes. This includes supporting managers with conduct matters, communication, performance conversations and positive culture building.

This role will suit someone who enjoys working with people, building relationships and creating practical solutions. You will need to be confident having honest conversations, gaining buy in from managers and supporting people through a range of situations with care and professionalism.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with managers to support people matters across the business
  • Coach and guide managers on positive culture, communication and correct people processes
  • Support conduct matters and help managers handle situations fairly, consistently and respectfully
  • Own the workers compensation process, including claims coordination, communication with insurers, return to work support and related payment follow up
  • Work with managers, injured team members, insurers and relevant parties to support smooth and practical return to work outcomes
  • Manage recruitment from start to finish, including job advertisements, shortlisting, candidate communication, interview scheduling and interview support
  • Conduct interviews where required and assist managers to run effective, fair and consistent interview processes
  • Coordinate onboarding and induction training so new staff feel welcomed, informed and set up for success
  • Help design and implement training programs for staff and managers
  • Support community and staff engagement initiatives across the business
  • Identify opportunities to implement smoother people processes, templates and practical manager tools
  • Help strengthen the people pathway across Kalis Hospitality
  • Build trusted relationships with managers and team members across multiple locations
  • Support a workplace culture based on community, growth, honesty and respect

About you

You are a people person with strong values, a practical mindset and a genuine interest in helping others grow. You enjoy working with managers, coaching people through challenges and finding solutions that are fair, respectful and aligned with the business.

You may already have experience as a People and Culture Advisor, HR Coordinator, HR Generalist or in a similar role. More importantly, you are eager to learn, confident building relationships and ready to take ownership of meaningful people projects.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Experience in a generalist HR, people and culture or similar role
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to advise and coach managers
  • A practical and respectful approach to problem solving and workplace matters
  • The ability to build trust and gain buy in from different stakeholders
  • Confidence supporting recruitment, onboarding, induction and training processes
  • An understanding of workers compensation and return to work processes, or the willingness to learn this area quickly
  • Good organisation skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, follow ups and deadlines
  • A genuine interest in training, culture, staff engagement and continuous improvement
  • A values driven approach to your work
  • Comfort supporting managers across multiple locations without needing to be on site every day
  • An understanding that family businesses operate differently to corporate environments
  • A passion for people, hospitality and positive workplace culture.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to be part of a growing people and culture function where your work will have a visible impact. You will help shape recruitment, onboarding, training, workers compensation, manager capability and staff engagement across the business.

If you are looking for a role where you can build relationships, make a difference and grow alongside the business, we would love to hear from you.
