Examples of duties

This position focuses on operating equipment and performing manual labor tasks that support road and bridge maintenance. Your work will focus on prioritizing safety practices, conducting field adjustments, and collaborating with a team in a variety of outdoor settings. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and other machinery needed for road and bridge maintenance
  • License Compliance: Maintain CDL qualifications and complete required pre-operation and post-operation checks
  • Traffic Control: Perform flagger duties to help direct traffic safely through work zones
  • Manual Labor: Use hand tools and motorized tools to complete tasks such as cutting brush, digging ditches, and repairing barriers
  • Equipment Care: Perform minor repairs, make adjustments, and keep equipment clean and ready for use
  • Safety Awareness: Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and support a safe environment for coworkers and the public

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work schedule is subject to change due to seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Winter shifts are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program; or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position requires that the E or O restriction is removed
  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • This position will require employees to obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
