Job Description


Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

Peer tutors assist students in achieving academically by meeting regularly to clarify learning
problems and work on study skills. Tutoring is a supplement to teaching.
Duties include:
  • Providing academic tutoring through face-to-face and Zoom appointments at no longer than 1 hr/session each.
  • Working with the tutoring coordinator to provide a schedule of availability that does not interfere with their class schedule.
  • Exchanging contact information with tutees to contact them directly with schedule changes. Any schedule changes must be reported to the tutoring coordinator 24-h in advance.
  • Communicating with the tutoring coordinator about tutee absences and lateness, as well as any additional issues that may arise.
  • Attending planned training sessions and meetings prior to and throughout work assignments.
  • Maintaining records of student contacts and statistics of the appointments.
  • Willingness to assist students with disabilities and specific learning needs with a calm and patient demeanor.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled VPCC student
  • Must be in good academic standing and show proficiency in the subject area(s) in which they tutor
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability with attendance record


Additional Considerations
  • Faculty referral by an instructor in the subject area in which they tutor
